On the first submarine I served on, the tins of bacon, ham, and SPAM (spices luncheon meat) were rectangular. And the cans were coloured dark green.

Once it came out of the tin, cooks had to soak it in water to lower the salt content...

It was happanstance. The man's lifestyle for years before that caused his heart attack./
