Greetings, Finished the new build about 3:30ish Central time U.S yesterday. It's been running BOINC for about 12+ hours. Everything is doing just fine. I haven't installed my Corsair H50 cooler yet, I wanted to see how the stock fan does. It does just fine. I couldn't run BOINC on the i7-860 with its stock fan. The one thing I'm not happy about is that ASUS got rig of PC Probe II which allowed for having at-a-glance info on temps and voltages. I need to see if I can find a third party that has something like that. Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I had an H50, on an old Quad Core cpu(lga775), the 1st one in fact, that cpu ran warm on an H50, but it did run, now I use an H70 with two Delta fans(113/148) with the air being drawn out of the case, works fine, I think I 'might' get a Corsair H80i GT eventually, since the H70 is getting old and one screw hole on the 38mm thick radiator is stripped. What sort of information are you looking for on the system that Probe previously provided? There are a lot of free utilities out there that can provide the same or similar information. Two of my favorite non-branded utilities are GPU-Z and CPU-Z. They're small and constantly updated to provide support for the newest hardware. These two are designed to the GPU and CPU, respectively. A more general utility is PC Wizard, although it takes up more resources. If you do have an EVGA GPU, you should consider their branded utilities, such as PrecisionX, which not only gives information about the GPU, but also allows for fine tune control of the GPU, such as setting an overclock, fan control, temperature control, etc. |

I might suggest SIV for overall system monitoring of temps, voltages, fan speeds, utilization and absolutely everything else going on in your system. http://www.rh-software.com/ I just leave it up in its window all the time. You know what's happening with your system all the time. Cheers, Keith P.S. It will also control your GPU temps and fan speeds. Greetings, Query: Just how important are the 'Optional' updates from Microsoft? I know there are those out here that adamantly refuse to install optional updates. I'm not looking for anyone saying "DON'T install the optional updates." I'm looking for information about them, not necessarily opinions dead set against them. And one other thing: Why do I see many optional updates listed in italics? Thank you in advance! :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? I might suggest SIV for overall system monitoring of temps, voltages, fan speeds, utilization and absolutely everything else going on in your system. Greetings Keith, I downloaded SIV quite some time ago when I saw it referenced in a post here in 'Number Crunching'. That program is information OVERLOAD. ;) All I was looking for was something to show temps, fan speeds and voltages. I found that in a program called 'HWMonitor' by CPUID. It's not quite what I was looking for, but it will suffice for now. Thank you for your suggestion though. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? Greetings Martin, I already have those. Problem is, they don't show temps. That is my highest priority ability. I want to be able to see the CPU and GPU core temps at a glance. Thank you for suggestion though. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. TThrottle will show temps at a glance. Greetings Brent, Ahhh! Yes it will. I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Query: Just how important are the 'Optional' updates from Microsoft? It depends on what they are. Select an update & on the right hand side are links to find out what the update actually is & does. Check them out & decide for yourself is the best option. Grant Darwin NT |

Or Core Temp for the CPU temperatures, GPU-Z for the GPU thingamahoolies and for extra overload of data and control issues, Speedfan. The latter so you can quickly manually override any automated fan speeds. Or CPUID HWMonitor will display all fan, temperature & voltages in the system. Grant Darwin NT |

The latter so you can quickly manually override any automated fan speeds. A Sidenote: Be aware that CoreTemp or CPUID HWMonitor doesn't work with AMD APU -series CPU's/Mobos. Like in my A10-7850K with Asus A88X-PLUS mobo, Asus AI Suite shows CPU temp at 35C, but CoreTemp shows about 7C, and HWMonitor shows 57C |

Anyway, the picture in Message 1695537, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=77580&postid=1695537 The connector being shown in the middle of the picture apparently is meant for CrossFireX/SLI support. Blame my mind or perhaps something else, but I had two graphics cards installed in this computer before being that foolish of pulling one of the cards for a Sound Blaster card instead. I previously attempted using a Crossfire/SLI cable between the two cards using a connector for this at the top of the card itself, not by means of the motherboard. This apparently did not work at all and the cards became separate when it came to the running of tasks. Therefore, why a connector or socket for this on the motherboard when such a connector rather should imply the graphics card? Definitely the graphics card in my computer is quite large when it comes to size. Possible because of this, I may perhaps be confused about a couple of things. Any explanations regarding this are welcome. Edit: Yes, Richard. I happen to know that. Therefore not the answer to my question. |

Crossfire (AMD) and the NVidia equivalent 'SLI' are used by programmers in the computer gaming industry, but not for distributed computing. |

The £Crossfire / SLI support" does not mean there is a connector within the board, but that those two board connectors are capable of supporting GPUs which have the top Crossfire/SLI connector plugged in. It is worth noting that SETI does not make use of SLI, and there are reports that SETI will see a pair of cards connected by SLI as a single GPU not two GPUs Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

The nice thing about SLI is that whenever you see it in the name, you know that you will have: 1. at least two full size pcie slots (sometimes 3) 2. the slots are designed to power video cards Some of the older motherboards had two full size pcie slots, but only one of them was designed for the video card. I am kind of looking for some older sli motherboards so I can use multiple gpu, but they are still in $100 range. |
