Hello I have seen a bunch of people here who are running more than 1 WU on their GPU and was wondering if my GTX 650 would be capable of this. Mine is the 2GB one with 384 cuda cores. Thanks for any info.

Well I was hoping someone else would take a crack at this but I guess I'll have to give it a go.

Yes you can run more than 1 work unit on the GTX 650. I think I was running 2 at a time when I had mine before the upgrade.

You have 2 options.

You can either use the lunatics app to try and improve your system or you can just created an app_config.xml to tell Seti to run 2 at a time.

The difference is with Lunatics you can tell Seti which Cuda type you want to use. With just creating the App_config.xml you will take which ever type Seti decides you should use.

Ok, lets assume you just want to run 2 at a time without any other modifications.

First stop any work and exit Boinc.

Open Notepad and copy the all the following.

<app_config>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.50</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.50</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

<app>
<name>astropulse_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.50</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.50</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Ok, now to save it. click on file and click Save As

This will open up a new box.

In file name type in app_config.xml

This will cause the computer to ask you if you REALLY want to use the ".xml" ending, yes you do.

Just below that is the "Save as type" Click on it and change it to All Files (*.*)

Encoding is the last part at the bottom. Make sure it says ANSI

now you are ready to save

Save it. Next you need to move this file to where it goes.

If you have ever modified seti before then you probably know where the Setiathome folder is.

If you haven't then we need to get you to there.

It should be located in the following unless you specified a different location

Local disk (C:) > ProgramData > Boinc > project > setiathome.berkeley.edu

each of the > means opening a folder in those places. If you don't see ProgramData then it is probably still hidden on your computer.

So we need to Unhide those folders.

1 Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

2 Click the View tab.

3 Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

Now you should be able to see ProgramData.

Follow the steps listed above to move the just created App_config.xml to the setiathome folder.

After this it is just restarting Boinc and see if it starts to crunch 2 work units at a time on the GPU

I think for now, let just get it up and running multiple instance first. After that we can proceed with these other modifications if you want.

Shawn Rothermund do what Zalster say's .

I have two GTX 650's runing on my main rig

I run 3 MB's at a time per GPU
I run 2 AP'S at a time per GPU ...I leave 1 CPU core free per Units doing AP's However you may get different results with a different CPU
i have a AMD CPU not INTEL witch may do AP's better

I only have 1 gig of ram on each GPU

This stops me running 3 AP's you need lightly more than 1 gig per GPU
And i can't do more than 3 MB's for the same reason

I have done 4 units but because of the lack on ram it slowed down to much , it was able to do them ok , just too slow . I use a gadget that tells me how much ram on the GPU's is being used in real time and i could see it was the ram switching . Yours won't have this problem if it has 2 gig onboard the GPU till you get to about 6 for MB's and 4-5 for AP's

Bear in mind the more units per GPU the slower the times so you have to balance out how many units in a give 24 hrs you will have done verses the time taken to do each unit

Too many and the times are so slow it's better to do less and end up with more done in a give 24 hrs

Good luck

For newbees to Lunatics

remember it's

0.50 for 2 units , one 1/2 , 50%
0.33 for 3 units , one 1/3 ,33%
0.25 for 4 units , one 1/4 ,25%

and so on

Just change your appinf.xml file each time you wish to change how many units to do

You can have one type of unit set to do 3 and the other type set to 2

It's not hard if you have any understanding of how to read code . Your appinf file has all the types of files that seti does but there is mainly only 2 types the Multibeam and AstroPulse .

Just remember to change all of them
