Ook in India, Bangladesh en China vielen dodelijke slachtoffers.

Onder het tiental in China, India iets meer. Geen weet van het aantal slachtoffers in Bangladesh..

Half of the Nepal's population are children, and UNICEF fears that the disaster will hit very hard on the children. UNICEF mobilizes now an immediate relief operation which among other things is about giving children protection and to distribute supplies like nutrition, water purification tablets and hygiene kits.

There also been a lot avalanches and even glaciers cracking up.
Lets us hope that Bangladesh will not be flooded...

A landslide in Geneva lake could start a tsunami able to destroy both Geneva and CERN. It has happened in the past and could happen again. Nature is stronger than us.

The latest figures are

According to the Nepalese officials 3,326 people have died and more than 6,500 people have been injured. At least 18 people have been killed in avalanches on Mount Everest.

The numbers will increase day by day, we have to accept that. Whatever can be done is being done by an international relief effort.

An earthquake consultant working for the UK government said Nepal was unprepared for an earthquake of this scale. Jon Bennett, from Oxford Development Consultants, had travelled to Nepal two weeks ago on behalf of the UK government to assess how ready the country was for an earthquake.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "We knew, when we were looking at the situation out there, that if there was going to be a very large earthquake like this, the level of the preparedness in the country was nowhere near sufficient to cope with the kind of events that were likely to unfold, as indeed has been the case."

Maybe an accurate scientific assessment. But practically speaking, where was Nepal going to get the money from to prepare? The last time was 80 years ago, how far in the future could the next one have been? How many other places just like Nepal are there in the world today?

Finally an exact number, they don't count the deaths by hundreds anymore..

Hundreds of villages in the central Nepalese district of Gorkha were among the hardest hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Saturday. The remote and mountainous region, home to an estimated 270,000 people, is struggling to evacuate survivors.
It could be days before some of the residents are reached by rescue teams. Many villages are on the steep slopes of precarious mountains and hillsides, where there remains a risk of landslides.
Helicopters have been struggling to conduct surveillance flights around these mountains due to heavy cloud cover, which has made it even more difficult for them to land and deliver any aid.

Unesco says most of the world heritage sites can be rebuilt, but it will cost a lot of time and money.

28 Belgians are missing, the B-Fast team is stuck in New Delhi due to an overcrowded airport of Kathmandu. The team is specialized in finding survivors between the debris, which gets more and more difficult now, over 4000 deaths atm.

"According to initial estimations and based on the latest earthquake intensity mapping, eight million people in 39 districts have been affected, of which over two million people live in the 11 severely affected districts," said the most recent report from the UN Office of the Resident Co-ordinator.

As of 27 April, the Government reports 3,351 deaths and 6,833 injured people.
* 8 million people in 39 districts have been affected, of which over 2 million people live in the 11 severely affected districts.
* Priority needs include food, water, shelter and medication. Over 1.4 million people are in need of food assistance.
* A Humanitarian Staging Area (HSA) in Kathmandu International Airport has been set-up to mitigate congestion at Kathmandu Airport.

Reinhold Messner says that too many helicopters are used to evacuate the Everest camps while they are badly needed in villages. Climbers should descend by foot if they are not injured. But of course Everest is an income source for Nepal.

Voorlopig vertrekuur is 14.15 uur.

The B-Fast team can possibly leave for Kathmandu around 2.15pm, there are 17 other rescue teams waiting to get to Kathmandu.
