Things are starting to heat up in a double sense in the Arctic.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will not be present in next week’s Ministerial Meeting in Arctic Council, where the United States will take over chairmanship from Canada.
On April 24, Ministers from the eight Arctic Council-member nations — Canada, the United States, Russia, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Iceland, as well as leaders from Indigenous permanent participant organizations, meet in the town of in Iqaluit in Canada.

Denmark has presented a claim to the UN, arguing that the area surrounding the North Pole is connected to the continental shelf of Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory.

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister left Norway’s Svalbard archipelago Saturday evening and flew to the North Pole. On Sunday, he started to send tweets making fun of Norwegian authorities.

The next Crimea?...

I don't Think so.
There are only about 2600 persons living there.
Besides Svalbard is a norwegian country and NATO member.
But 16% of them are Russian/Ukrainian...

"The Arctic is Russian Mecca".
https://twitter.com/DRogozin
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, was the main hero of all Norwegian news. And all because of the fact that the plane with the Deputy Prime Minister on board made a "technical" stop at the island of Spitsbergen. Thus Rogozin, contrary to the prohibition, visited the territory of Norway, considered in Oslo. The Russian Foreign Ministry occasion to protest not see. At Arctic island special status, and to prohibit visits here Norway has no right. And he said Rogozin perturbed Oslo as follows: after a fight with his fists do not wave.

Dmitry Rogozin doesn't understand that almost every Russians are welcome to Svalbard.
Not him because Norway says Dmitry Rogozin is sanctioned because he has publicly called for the annexation of Crimea!

A majority of the people living in the Arctic wants to continue cooperation with Russia despite the conflict in Ukraine. Norwegians are most in favor of diplomatic and cooperative approaches, a new survey shows.
http://barentsobserver.com/en/arctic/2015/04/majorities-arctic-nations-favor-cooperation-russia-23-04
The survey was conducted in the United States, Canada, Russia, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

Now hope that "Putte"/"Vova" Putin and Dmitry Rogozin reads the survey...

Niila Inga, a Sami leader in that part of Sweden that is above the Arctic Circle, has this to say about the impact of climate change on the future of his reindeer herding society: “If this climate change keeps going at this rate, I’m pretty sure that the reindeer won’t survive it. It goes too fast right now. And without the reindeer, the whole Sami culture will disappear, and the world will be an indigenous people poorer.”

Niila’s message is one we should heed. Scientists predict disastrous developments for humanity if global warming continues on its current trajectory. The scientific data are clear. 2014 was the hottest year on record. Fourteen of the fifteen warmest years on record have occurred since the year 2000. We are potentially looking at an ice-free summer in the Arctic as early as 2040, just 25 years from now.

BP:)

On 16 June 2010, Svanberg met with US President Barack Obama to discuss BP's responsibility for the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He caused a PR uproar by afterwards expressing BP's concern for the common people along the Gulf Coast of the United States whose livelihood is threatened by the oil spill by saying, "We care about the small people", drawing upon a Swedish phrase, den lilla människan. The correct translation of the Swedish phrase would have been "the common person". Svanberg subsequently apologized for the term and attributed his unfortunate choice of words to a "slip in translation".[5]

That the whole Sami culture will disappear seems very omnius to me.

"Putte" Putin's counter-move on "Arctic Challenge" - its own giant exercise!

"Arctic Challenge" is one of the world's largest air force exercises. Besides organizing trio Sweden, Norway and Finland NATO countries like Germany and the UK also participates.

The same day that the ACE commenced announced the Russian news agencies Interfax and Tass that President Putin had ordered a surprise inspection to review the military's combat readiness in the central parts of the country, writes the BBC.

"More than 100 fighters have regrouped to enable a sudden inspection of combat readiness," the Russian Defense Ministry on its Web site on Tuesday morning.

"Special focus is on air coordination under field conditions and the regrouping of air defense units to new bases by rail."

Russia Just Laid Claim to a Vast Chunk of the Arctic.
https://news.vice.com/article/russia-just-laid-claim-to-a-vast-chunk-of-the-arctic?utm_source=vicenewstwitter
Vladimir Putin has long considered the Arctic a Russian "sphere of special interest," and on Tuesday, Russia formally petitioned the UN for a large chunk of Arctic territory. Russia is hoping to use a little-known international treaty — The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea — to claim a 460,000 square mile section of the frozen landmass that's thought to contain nearly 5 billion tons of oil.

The move is the latest in an international scramble for the oil-rich and strategically significant Arctic. In addition to Russia, the United States, Canada, Denmark, and Norway are all jockeying to claim chunks of the region, which some experts predict could hold a quarter of the world's untapped oil reserves and natural gas deposits.

I'm surprised it's taken this long for somebody to do a land grab up there.

So far it's only claims.
But the Russian military escalation in the region is omnius to us in Scandinavia.
The North Calotte has always been an interest of Russia.

Anyway. It might take up to 15 years to settle the Arctic delimitation issue, the Russian Foreign Ministry says.
http://barentsobserver.com/en/arctic/2015/08/russia-ready-talk-denmark-over-north-pole-05-08

The North Calotte is also called Sapmi. The land of Sami.
As you can see Sapmi is also a part of Russia.

In July Russian adventurer Sergey Ananov was forced to ditch his helicopter in icy waters between Canada and Greenland. Here he describes his two-day battle against high winds and extreme temperatures - and a few unexpected guests.

Thanks Jann , another hot spot starting this is not good what with the poler cap melting as fast as it is .

There is already a lot of shipping using the Russian side to short cut through to Asia in summer , the north west passage is normally not open as long as the Russian side is .Blocking there side to shipping while there supplying Syria with Arms is defenatly on the cards if we are not careful in the middle East .

Now oil and gas in those areas ...............bad

Correction.
Russia sends military equipment and troops to Syria. The transfer is from the military port of Novorossiysk, at the Black Sea near Crimea.

Maybe it wont be any oil drilling in the Arctic.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/08/world/europe/melting-ice-isnt-opening-arctic-to-oil-bonanza.html?_r=0
The Kremlin spent billions in the last decade in hopes of turning it into a northern hub of its energy powerhouse, Gazprom. It was once the most ambitious project planned in the Arctic Ocean, but now there is little to show for it aside from a shuttered headquarters and an enormous gravel road carved out of the windblown coastline like a scar.
