Morning All, Gordon I played the 'upgrade game' with Century Link and noticed no improvement. Their small print says Maximum speeds may not be available in your ares. They really cover their butts. I've been with Comcast for 4 years now, and they tried to jack my fees up. I went to the local office in person, wearing my Navy cap, and explained I had never made a late payment(I've had cable TV service from them for 30 years), and that I'm on Social Security and can't afford to pay more. It worked! They discounted my rates back to the original agreement...it pays to make noise!

I would ponder it Gordon :-) You need to decide how much extra it would cost you, and what you might do with the extra speed. I can only give you an honest opinion that if you do switch, that in only a little while you will wonder why you put up with the previous slower speeds as long as you did!

Watch the offers though. They say silly money to switch, but when you look into it it's only for the first year, then you pay a lot more afterwards. To be honest 3mb these days is pretty snail crawling. Given your new role (brave man I must say!) you might need a bit more performance your end now.

They actually claim it would be an overall reduction in $ for me. It probably is a bait, and I'm not sure I want to be on that hook, plus my alarm system requires the analogue signal inherent to copper.

Ha ha, brave. ;~) Maybe.

Actually, Gordon, you can switch your internet and keep your telephone on POTS. (Plain Old Telephone Service.) That will satisfy your home alarm needs of a copper line. The alarm is tied to the phone line; NOT the internet.

Just make sure that if/when you make the switch that you INSIST that your phone remain as it is; a regular land line phone. Although, their advertising package probably states "Digital phone", or "VoIP phone" and "High Speed Internet"; you still have the choice to keep your phone as POTS. (With AT&T, anyway.) If you ever do switch your phone to VoIP service, I HIGHLY recommend Vonage over AT&T Voice, Comcast Voice, or any other VoIP service. Vonage gives you MANY features that the other companies DON'T deliver on... Plus, Vonage World, (the package I'm on), includes international calling to 60+ countries.
