Message 1656806 - Posted: 25 Mar 2015, 19:05:28 UTC

A Federal Government employee and retiree; my Uncle John was an agent of the US Treasury. He worked in the Chicago area, with a partner, and foiled many illicit drug deals going through O'Hare airport.

I remember one of his busts. I was in Junior High at the time, and we were visiting my Aunt, Uncle, and my cousins. Uncle John hadn't yet arrived home from work when the evening news broke out about a MAJOR drug bust at O'Hare. Because of the nature of the bust, the news was unable to name my Uncle nor his partner, directly; however, in the middle of the report, my Uncle walked in the door. He heard the news going on, and said, "That was us!"

He was a good family man, devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren. A couple of years ago, he was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. He has been dying a little bit each day, until this morning when he finally passed away. My mom gave me the news a few minutes ago.

Now, at least, he finally has peace.

God bless, Uncle John. R.I.P.

Your nephew,

Scott

Just found out, (mom was doing research online), that we can't afford to go back for the funeral. :-(

I have no money, and my parents were going to use reward points for one of them and the other would pay. Cheapest Senior flight to and from Midway is over $500 + Rental Car,+ Hotel... For my two parents alone, it would be over $1000. :-(

Sucks... If I was working and had money, I'd go...

Thanks everyone. :-)

Update:

My dad is trying to find a way to go by himself... I don't know, yet, if this will happen.

Check with the airlines, don't they special rates when there's a death in the family?

RIP Mr Stecker. Felled by such a little thing, after busting dangerous people, I can sympathise Scott, I lost My older Brother to Lung Cancer/Emphysema, the cancer metastasized to His Brain. :(

Sorry to hear about the loss of your uncle, TL.
I lost a dear one myself a year or so ago, who I shall always remember very fondly.
Hope you can do the same.

Rest in Peace, John Stecker.

While I'm sure that they do offer bereavement rates; I don't think those rates beat Senior rates; but, I could be wrong.

We've all talked with my Aunt. She knows our situation. She told my parents not to spend the money. Two of my cousins, and their families live close. The third cousin and her husband are flying in; they either got there today, or they're getting there tomorrow. I believe the funeral is Saturday.

I'm sorry I missed this initially. I didn't recognize the name in the subject line, and didn't open the thread.

Take care, Scott. I'm sorry about your loss.
