I am a am testing Build 10036 of Windows. I notice that the new method for choosing screen savers in this build does not allow one to chose an external screen saver. It this goes goes through, Windows 10 will kill elective screen savers as far as I know. There may be ways to save but Ill have to experiment on my own system.

SETI@home does not require the screen saver to crunch data. The SETI screen saver as it is, has enough problems that it may be wise just to kill it off anyway. It doesn't work properly on some hardware; there is no screen saver for GPU workunits; most people don't like the 3D spinning; most hardcore crunchers don't even use it. The Lunatics optimized applications don't even include the screen saver option.

I don't see how Windows 10 will put SETI@home in much danger. BTW, this probably belongs in Number Crunching and not SETI@home Science.

Thank you. If it needs to be moved then feel free.

Good news as of 10039 BOINC is a built in screen saver!!! I havent run it yet and am unsure how to...by BOINC is there. I keep working on it. this a SETI will not die because of Windows, (I don't think).BTW, I love SET@home with the screen saver.

I have it running in the background constantly unless I suspend it. Using Win7.

I have never used the screen saver since I moved to Boinc, and not even after I learned about the command line version of Seti Classic.

In fact, I usually don't even remember that there IS a screen saver.

Nice to know it will be an available option, but with LCD monitors, I don't use screen savers anymore, either. Now, my ancient Mac G4, on the other hand, is still running on an Apple CRT Monitor, but I keep that monitor off when I'm not actively using it.......

I do too.

Provided it blanks after 5 minutes to avoid wasting CPU cycles.

Indeed. I had a cow-orker once who used the "random" screensaver in RHEL4. He was often out of the room, screensaver running but (LCD) screen blank(!). From time to time I'd hear his CPU fan spin up and kick into high gear, and if I went over and wiggled his mouse one particular screensaver would be running -- Pipes IIRC.
What a waste of CPU cycles!

Sorry I have to take it back. I do use a screen saver. I set it for none. The screen goes blank after 15 minutes. LOL.

I don't even do that, except on laptops when running on battery. (And I don't crunch on my laptops anyway.)

(Actually, my only two functioning desktops share a monitor through a four-way KVM switch and when I walk away from them, I set the KVM to an empty input, which lets the monitor go to sleep on its own. I wish I could change the time before my screen here at work goes blank, but the building IT people tell me even they don't have the administrative privilege level to change that.)

Win 10 is still a technical preview, so don't conclude so soon.
OTOH, no harm to complain this limitation against Micro$oft!

If you do the 10049 update you can stat playing around with Spartan.
