Hello Steve,

Thanks for that.

You won't find me dead on Facebook, not even when the whole of the rest of the world is on it and it's the only reliable source for news. I don't like their lack of privacy.
I don't tweet either. Not really the type to feel the need to tell the world my every thought. I just wish they didn't either, but alas.

Weird though that you're not on Google+, Tumblr or LinkedIn (just to name a few). ;-)

Does that mean you're going to blog about all things Seti from now on?

Hello Steve. Thank you for all. Yes, Berkeley SETI Research Center should be on LinkedIn also!

You won't find me dead on Facebook ...

I don't use social sites either but this Facebook page is visible without log-in.

The only thing I clicked on is this link/page which looks interesting (but consumes full CPU core):
"Animated map showing SETI@home data in randomized order from a 5 minute period within the last 24 hours":
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/kiosk/

...and very interesting to see LOFAR as a data source. How long has that been pumping data??

Greetings and Salutations:

I just now read the most recent notice from SETI@home.

I have, or had, accounts on the FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace, and Linkedin web sites, but I've found all of those social networking web sites are boring, and so, I no longer use them.

Thank you.

Hi Steve!

Rather than fill up the entire thread with comments about how those responding don't use social media (and I don't), I want to say that I think it's a great idea to reach out to a new generation of people using this medium as so many other corporate and academic entities do.

Perhaps along with fresh young minds might come some new willingness to help generate some much needed funds too! ;-)

Will you be posting here on the message boards at all? Or just the social media sites?

Nor will I be on FaceTwit any time soon.
They could have iron-clad, bomb-proofed privacy and security and I still would have nothing to do with them.
I suppose I'll just have to make do with whatever dregs and dribble of updates and information the teams condescend to copy over to old, out-moded, old-fashioned communications channels.
If any.
It was bound to happen, so I'm neither angry nor disappointed. Just a little sad.

To all,

I am new to the SETI group. I for one do endorse social media. The SETI site on FB is how I learned of this site - and I am thankful for the volunteer work that these peeps put into the program!!!

Social media can be used in intelligent and meaningful ways. I doubt anyone would post top secret info... even here... on the "secure" channel..
Yes grammar and people who get under your skin (possibly like me) are out there.I have noticed that this FB site is watched and irrelevant content is removed.

I'm glad that SETI has given me a portal into some of the work they do.

Thanks guys!

I am among those who don't use social media but I think this is a good idea, the more people we reach out to the better.

Ditto the anti-Facebook sentiment but more to the point, I just wanted to comment on the animated map.

It's a real kick in the pants. Really enjoy it. Is it possible to add a zoom in capability? It would be a trip to get a visual notion of how many crunchers there are in the metro Washington DC area. I'm sure others would feel the same about their home turf.

Also enjoying the interviews. This is good stuff. Quite a moral booster.

One question comes to mind and excuse if this has been discussed elsewhere... are we crunchers working on files from GBT and/or LOFars? I got the impression it was just Arecibo - but someday other sites.

I am on Facebook because several of the Veterans' Service Organizations I belong to use it as one of their primary comms channels. Many of out younger members prefer text and FB to regular email and voice comms. In this "modern" world, you must use the tools available to you....

I see a lot of data recently from Parks in Einstein@home. I assume this is Parks in Australia. Curious to know if they ever be another SETI data source.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. We're not abandoning these forums, and in fact you should see more frequent posts about SETI@home and Berkeley SETI Research Center (BSRC) science right here, as well as once a week or so as notices in the SETI@home client itself. Media intern Chris Schodt and I are working our way through video profiles of members of the team. We'll be chatting with Dave Anderson in about an hour, in fact, and once we're done editing that you should see it go live on YouTube within a few weeks.

We'll also try to keep other interesting and relevant information flowing a bit more frequently. Eric, Matt, and other team members will continue to post in these forums too, particularly on more technical topics.

I appreciate that many of you don't use Facebook or Twitter, but if you are not averse to visiting the sites themselves (and I understand that some of you are) then you should still be able to see our content without needing to create an account there. I'll be posting links on Twitter to SETI and planet-hunting news of interest, but the Facebook posts will mostly be things that directly involve BSRC scientists. I will try to cross post most of the Facebook material here too. I don't really have the bandwith right now to do Google+, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest, Snapchat, Sandwich, MonkeyPants, (I made those last two up), etc. too.

As you've probably gathered I'm new to the BSRC team myself, although I've been a radio astronomy researcher at UC Berkeley since 2007. Communicating with SETI@home volunteers is currently a small fraction of my paid work here so I apologize in advance if I'm not as responsive to questions or comments as you might wish. The rest of our small team here at Berkeley are all extremely busy too keeping everything running as well as developing new instruments (see my latest post in this forum about optical and infrared SETI at Lick Observatory), new algorithms, and other new ideas.

We're all very grateful to our volunteers and we're trying hard to be a bit better about keeping in touch. Thanks for your patience!

Currently SETI@home is only crunching data from Arecibo. We're working to get SERENDIP VI up and running at Green Bank (hopefully within a year) but it might take longer to actually integrate Green Bank data into SETI@home. Andrew Siemion is working with a team at LOFAR too but again we're not crunching LOFAR data yet and that's probably even a bit longer off. I spoke to Matt Lebofsky and he'll edit the kiosk display to make this a bit clearer.

Some SETI work has been done at Parkes, particularly by our colleagues at the SETI Institute, but Berkeley scientists aren't currently running SETI observations there.
