A great hero of mine, So dignified and brave with his medical problem. An Icon for many. Eccentric and literary genius. So off the wall. R.I.P. Happy Crunching, Graham |

Death as a short order fry cook. Who else would have thought of it. (Edit) If I remember correctly. Douglas Adams was said to have been reading a "Disc World" book when he passed. |

I read his first book when it came out in 1983 and he was a basically an unknown author. It ended on a cliff hanger and the wait for the sequel was agonising! Who knew he would end up such a prolific and loved author. I have pretty much all of his books, either in regular or digital format. I am actually reading "snuff" at the moment so its sad to think this will be one of the last of his books I shall read. I think he has one more out now. I loved the TV adaptations and forced my kids to watch them. His death has made me sad. Reality Internet Personality |

Sad news. As I have to rearange my Library any way, I will set his books aside for a reread. A few inherited books have been set a side for a new read anyway. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

I've never read any of him, but always wanted to give him a try. Where should I start? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

I've never read any of him, but always wanted to give him a try. Where should I start? To quote another great author. "Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop." Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

I've never read any of him, but always wanted to give him a try. Where should I start? The first book in the Discworld series is 'The Colour of Magic' . A person who makes no mistakes, creates nothing. |

I've never read any of him, but always wanted to give him a try. Where should I start? I'll see if the library has it. Are there non-Discworld books too? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

I'll see if the library has it. Are there non-Discworld books too? Yes there are, there is one small series about little people that lived in a shop, similar to the film 'The Borrowers'. I don't know the titles of this series. There also other stories by him, but I have not read them so I can't say anything about them. . A person who makes no mistakes, creates nothing. |

Wikipedia says "The books frequently parody, or take inspiration from J. R. R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft and William Shakespeare, as well as mythology, folklore and fairy tales," I have never read Tolkien and Lovecraft, and I'm not sure I've even heard of Howard. (I'd say I have average knowledge of Shakespeare.) Will I still enjoy them? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

I believe that most will enjoy them, the references to other writers aren't central to the stories, but rather additional humour if you do know the referred to item. They are free-standing stories. While there is a "sequence" of them, they are split into a number of settings within the discworld, and can more-or-less be read in any order. Some are more for younger readers, some more for those older, but not exclusively. The other stories he was involved in writing are grouped as well. Buy any of the later books, like Thud, Raining Steam or Going Postal, and most publishers include an extensive list of his other work, chronologically and grouped by story series(at least here in the UK, I'm not sure about those in the US and elsewhere) Happy Crunching, Graham |
