Back when the PS3's firmware allowed third-party OSes to run, it was possible to install Linux and run BOINC from there. Unfortunately for those who invested in PS3 crunching farms (which were quite powerful at the time), Sony released a firmware update disabling the ability to use a third-party OS. So unless you can find PS3s with the right firmware that never get updated, it is no longer possible to crunch on a PS3.

GPUs have a far more impressive performance per watt ratio for crunching anyway.

Even if you manage to find a PS3 with the correct firmware, it is no longer possible to use it, because the available PS3 science applications are Seti (5.27) and Astropulse v5 (5.03 and 5.06).
