Message 1639394 - Posted: 9 Feb 2015, 17:26:10 UTC - in response to Message 1639323.

This is a recipe that I've used occasionally over the years. I have absolutely no idea where I got it. Makes sense that I picked it out of the newspaper or a magazine since I cannot recall it in connection with a specific person. I do know that it was used for school lunches when there was no bread in the house. It's best warm or very fresh!

3 cups self-rising flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup beer

Sift flour with sugar in mixing bowl - add beer and mix thoroughly. Transfer to a greased loaf tin and bake for about 45 minutes at 375 degrees. Butter the top of the loaf when it comes out of the oven.

Be sure that you use self-rising flour or the results will not please you.

And don't use light beer. Has to be a normal beer of your preference.

That sounds sort of like an American version of Yorkshire pudding. Chris?

More like a sweet pancake that a Yorkshire pudding.

For a Yorkshire Pudding try -

140g plain flour (this is about 200ml/7fl oz)
4 eggs (200ml/7fl oz)
200ml milk
sunflower oil, for cooking

Heat oven to 230C/fan 210C/gas 8. Drizzle a little sunflower oil evenly into 2 x 4-hole Yorkshire pudding tins or a 12-hole non-stick muffin tin and place in the oven to heat through.
To make the batter, tip 140g plain flour into a bowl and beat in four eggs until smooth. Gradually add 200ml milk and carry on beating until the mix is completely lump-free. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the batter into a jug, then remove the hot tins from the oven. Carefully and evenly pour the batter into the holes. Place the tins back in the oven and leave undisturbed for 20-25 mins until the puddings have puffed up and browned.

Two important things, first the egg must be eggs, I've tried it with powdered eggs and it fails dramatically.
Second, make sure the cooking tins are hot before you add the batter.

(As an aside a Yorkshire man will tell you to use beef dripping, not sunflower oil, I would say its a matter of taste)

Self raising just doesn't sound right.

Self rising just doesn't sound right, unless it's said with a VERY plummy and nasal accent.

Not sure where this link should go, is it science, politics or lifestyle-food.

But as it mainly concerns what you eat I'll put it here.

Try all three. You'll eventually get the right one.

I realise you are the originator, but please read my first sentence.

It basically tells you that if you do not like it here, either suggest a better place or ask the mods to send it to a more appropriate place.

But as far as I am concerned a very large number of recipes require fats, either in the ingredients or used as the cooking medium, therefore IMHO "Cooking for real" involves fats.
If it is put in the science board some people will not see it, and if it goes to the zoo called Politics most people avoid it like the plague, and it would never get to the attention of those who like to make their own meals.
