For some reasons I can't crunch much atm and that is why I don't wanna build up a cache of tasks. But from time to time I would like to crrunch for a few hours in which I don't need the computer otherwise. The problem is just that there are never any APs available. I tried 4 or 5 times over the last 2 weeks or so but it's always the same, no tasks available. So I just just wonder why they don't provide more APs when everybody is eager to get them. Isn't it possible for some reason? |

So I just just wonder why they don't provide more APs when everybody is eager to get them. Isn't it possible for some reason? There are still issues with the AP database, so that results in problems in creating work. Even then, the odds of them producing work & it being available at just the time you want some to crunch are pretty much next to none. I'd suggest just setting a cache size that suits you, and the manager will work out how much time the computer is available to process work & will download work, when it is available, in accordance with your cache settings. There have been problems with the AP database for a few months now. Two weekends ago, we thought the problem had finally been fixed, so the backlog of database operations got cleaned up and new work was made, and then for some reason, everything (AP-related) is disabled now. It will be nearly impossible to get any AP tasks right now. When the splitters are running, you should be able to get at least one AP with every work fetch request. I typically get 1-5 at a time until my cache is full, with just a few "no tasks available" responses from the scheduler sprinkled in there. You can see what the AP status is by going to the server status page (SSP) and see what's going on. You can find that page on the dark blue bar up at the top of the page > About > Server status. I have a page open on my browser at all times with my AP task list showing. So I know pretty darn well when AP work is flowing and when it is not. Regardless of any status page issues. I have been getting a resend here and there every couple of hours....on 9 rigs. I don't know just what the AP database issues are right now. I had been informed that it was fixed, but something has crashed again, obviously. It is what it is. The kitties are happy enough doing all the MB they can muster at present. The crunchers go through them at a rather amazing rate when shorties abound.... "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

So I just just wonder why they don't provide more APs when everybody is eager to get them. Isn't it possible for some reason? Well, MBs are available pretty much all the time, why isn't that possible for APs? (besides the db issues ofc). I really don't like crunching MBs much, but most times I don't have a choice. @Mark: Welcome back! |

So I just just wonder why they don't provide more APs when everybody is eager to get them. Isn't it possible for some reason? Thanks, NX.... AP work has had it's troubles as of late, as you have noted. I am not sure when it shall be fixed, or IF it can. There is a real possibility that things are borked beyond repair, but I am not going to go there now. Something is really badly hurt. And I won't give up hope that it can be righted just yet. I know Eric and Matt are all over it, and if it can be fixed, it shall be so done. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Oh man, I really hope it can be fixed. And I hope they got their share from the last fundraiser (which made a few millions IIRC) so they can get some new hardware and/or more manpower. Anyway, I just set up my lappy for Seti again because I don't need it for anything else right now, and again there are no APs:-( |

....(which made a few millions IIRC).... ?????? If they had even a quarter of a million dollars to spend we wouldn't be having these issues. Grant Darwin NT |

What's the matter with MB's? Not enough Credit. Grant Darwin NT |

What's the matter with MB's? For many, it's about the Credit, and the fact is MB doesn't pay at all well. Grant Darwin NT |

@Grant: I have to check my emails but IIRC it was around 5kk. This was a UCB fundraiser ofc, not one for Seti only. @CLYDE: I do crunch MB when there are no APs, but I prefer APs. |

@Grant: I have to check my emails but IIRC it was around 5kk. This was a UCB fundraiser ofc, not one for Seti only. If it was "not one for Seti only" why not to mention total country GDP instead and base own claims on that value? It will be bigger and more sound, not?... |

@Grant: Rly? OMG, I didn't know that, I always thought it's part of UCB. Ok, that explains a lot. |

@Grant: Rly? OMG, I didn't know that, I always thought it's part of UCB. Ok, that explains a lot. As I understand it. They basically they volunteer their time to work on the project when they are not busy with their paid jobs at the Uni. As I recall it was stated they would need a budget of something like $100k-$130k a year to have a dedicated staff member for SETI@home. Given the SETI@home budget that isn't a realistic option. Back in November Eric said "It would be nice to think that we can afford to hire someone for just 6 months, but we typically can't." @Grant: Rly? OMG, I didn't know that, I always thought it's part of UCB. Ok, that explains a lot. Meanwhile, I've seen comments throughout the years of people saying they refuse to donate more money until the project improves its operations, and they can't improve their operations unless they have more hands (and expertise) to help. Further, people seem to be more willing to invest in their own personal computing farms to increase their RAC, become angry when the project goes down due to some unforeseen problem, and insist the project is responsible for their electric bills due to idling CPUs not being put to use. And no one wants to donate freely to the project where it needs it the most: man power. [Edited to correct my use of the apostrophe for Ageless and Weird Al] |

@Grant: I have to check my emails but IIRC it was around 5kk. This was a UCB fundraiser ofc, not one for Seti only. I'm not really sure what the problem is here. As I said, I thought that Seti is an offical project of the University. And the email I got some time ago reads: THANKS TO YOU, the numbers are inspiring: during the 24 hours of Big Give, $5,309,418 was raised from 7,336 gifts. That is the largest number of online gifts UC Berkeley has ever received in a single day! So of course I thought that Seti would receive a fair share of this amount. @HAL: Thx for further explanation! |

@Grant: I have to check my emails but IIRC it was around 5kk. This was a UCB fundraiser ofc, not one for Seti only. I wouldn't be surprised if UCB is including donations targeted to S@H in that total. That doesn't mean S@H is getting anything over and above its targeted donations.
