hi everyone, would like something explained for us less tech people trying to help. Normally i get Wu's lasting 4 to 5 hours each. which is ok. but i am also getting some odd Wu's trying to download to my pc. it shows as like a 27 hour download, and keeps getting suspended, usually due to cpu in use, or by me aborting the file. The status shows resources: 0.00216 cpu's + 1 NVIDIA GPU Can someone explain in english what this is ? it does not appear to look like the other "normal" Wu's. thanks

With your computers hidden it is very difficult (impossible) to see what the work unit is meant to be, and what your computer configuration is, thus identify what the problem is. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Your computers are still hidden. Anyway, my guess is that the long running WU are AP. SETI has 2 types of WU. MB which generally run 6 to 7 hrs and AP whose run time is in the 30 hrs range on modern CPU. These are split from the same tapes but do the analysis in very different ways. AP are larger chunk of data (8 Meg) and not as plentifully as MB and can be identified by their WU number which have a suffix of AP. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

odd, the website must not be updating it. probably shouldnt include the link but here it is, (if it helps) http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?userid=10088957 im just using the BOINC manager 7.4.36 (x86) on xp, i do not see AP or anything like that. the last one i stopped had a task name 25oc12ac.24856.22971.438086664201.12.33_0 with a WU of 1691076300

This one? http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7487541&offset=0&show_names=1&state=0&appid=20 3935464081 1687973111 26 Jan 2015, 16:30:01 UTC 27 Jan 2015, 10:05:24 UTC Aborted by user 2.04 1.31 --- AstroPulse v7 v7.03 (sse) Its an AstroPulse (AP), which would take a few days on your computer. AP tasks count up progress in steps, from memory there are 111 steps. On a slow computer the remaining time will often increase. thanks rob. there was just the 1 that shows with the (AP) i noticed though. i think the tasks with SETI@home v7 v7.00 (cuda22) are what im referring to. isn't the (cuda22) the SETI@home Enhanced ? As far as I know i don't have it or the (AP) selected, just the SETI@home is.

Can anyone tell me why id be getting an AstroPulse (AP) wu ? Do you have "If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications?" set to Yes? If so, that could explain it. |

hi Ozzfan, "If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications?" is set to No.

Cuda32 is MB work assigned to your GPU. They should process much faster (~1 hr) than the CPU |

Probably more like 3-4 hours on the OP's Athalon 64, but still a lot quicker than an AP. (I would expect an AP to take about 40-50 hours on an Athlon 64) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Cuda32 is MB work assigned to your GPU. They should process much faster (~1 hr) than the CPU not from what ive seen on my machine.. they are more like 25 to 30+ hours just to download. and its never completed a download to try the processing. (they never finish downloading due to a "GPU suspended-computer in use" message) the regular Wu's i get (without the cuda) are only like 3 to 7 hours processing. and minutes for downloading. something must not be set right if it should be better.

Maybe a better way to describe the problem is i have a dual core processor. Authentic AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ [Family 15 Model 107 Stepping 2] (2 processors) I have Memory of 2302.48 MB and Swap space of 5600.62 MB I have a cable internet connection over 3MB/s download & over 300kb/s upload. and cant figure out why downloading an (AP) would take 10 to 30 hours. (when i can download a 1 GB movie in 30 minutes or less) or why processing a regular Wu takes 3 to 5 hours with the CPU setup i have.

I can't comment on your download problems, but I once had one of those AMD processors, and can assure you that they are far from the fastest processor around. My 6-core Phenom and 8-core FX are both faster and some work units take a couple of hours on those. Intel i series processors are much faster, and will turn round "shorties in about 30 minutes, but even they can take an hour or more for some WU. (And I'm not talking about APs.) These days GPUs are so far ahead of CPUs for most tasks, and even on my GTX980 I've had tasks taking 20 minutes or so. BTW I do appreciate any assistance in resolving this, But yes your right there, I know AMD is not the best. (far from it) but it should be more than plenty enough to handle seti@home "progressively". like im not running 4 or 5 projects or a dozen other programs with it. or trying to play games with it running at the same time. As for the download issue, it must be a problem with BOINC or seti@home settings. the regular files download ok, its the (AP) or the tasks with SETI@home v7 v7.00 (cuda22) that are slow as molasses downloading. 10 to 30+ hours to download 1 seems very irregular on a cable connection. (or any connection for that matter) especially if the file is less than 200 MB would make one think they are downloading more than just a task at 30+ hours. (just saying, no disrespect or anything intended)

A couple of things, first, make sure BOINCmanager has unrestricted access through your firewall. Second (and this has caused a few trouble) some anti-virus software can be "over enthusiastic" when dealing with the very random data that comes from the project. Some have reported that running too many AV tools causes no end of problems as they end up fighting each other. Finally do a speed test - not every cable supplier is as honest as they might be in their delivery of performance - a friend of mine who's contract is for 20Mb download is on a free service because most of the time he is rarely getting 1Mb.... (and the perpetual promise of "We'll fix it next month") He's not too worried as he's getting all the service he needs to get his emails for nothing (but I bet the local pub notices when he goes in to do an update/download). hi Rob, I just did 4 internet tests, and while i know my connection is not the best, It is far from slow or like the older "dial up style". i know we never get to access websites at real reported speeds anyway. its like the websites put a limit on how fast you can access them. my average download rates are between 5. Mbps and 14. Mbps (not kbps) and average upload is between 1. Mbps and 2. Mbps (not kbps) while still low for cable, it should be plenty fast enough for seti@home tasks. (plus a lot more) adds mystery to why 1 (AP) or (cuda) task takes 10+ hours to download. as for the virus software and firewall, I use Comodo Internet security. Its free, but has worked perfect for me over the last 4 years ive used it. i even gave the BOINC program trusted access. and nothing from BOINC or seti@home is restricted. thats why i think its in the settings or to do with the BOINC software. like the version im using might not be intended for windows xp. Is there a version of the software that just handles the regular tasks? like no (AP) or (cuda) tasks. or is it all or none type software now. the older seti@home classic never did those.

If anyone can maybe suggest some adjustments to the settings that i can try, maybe a different BOINC version that may work better on my old windows xp pro, I would greatly appreciate it. Note, if anyone noticed my signature, you'd see my system is "different". Acer aspire x1200 never came with windows xp on it. (just vista and newer) (i personally do not like vista or win7) So suggestions appreciated.

One question - when did this work unit get delivered? The reason being there have been the odd download stall if the transfer is at a critical point when the server is shutdown for whatever reason. You have been receiving work recently - how long have those tasks taken to get through, becuase your reported download speed is only about half mine, and I'm seeing MB tasks taking about 2-3sec, so I would expect tasks to take about 5-10sec on your system - they are only 300kb or so (an AP task is 8Mb, so does take a bit longer, say half a minute or so. Edit to add: I don't know of any setting in BOINC. The reason being it is designed as a "Fit and leave" interface and management environment to allow projects like SETI to run.
