Romano Prodi, former president on the European Commission, said yesterday that it is the time to move from emotions to political actions. The first thing to do is the creation of an European Army, the dream of De Gasperi and Schuman, which was scuttled by France. Tullio |

I hate to play Devil's advocate, but can Europe afford it? After all, there's NATO. |

Shouldn't this be in Politics? (this just got moved while I was making coffee & pondering a reply... still not fully awake!) No more than the Atheist Ten Commandments belong here. In the sense that the OP can decide what kind of discussion they want in their thread. Sure both threads can easily qualify as a political matter but that doesn't mean the OP is necessarily looking for a heated debate. And as long as the Café serves beer, some philosophical subjects/topics are bound to arise:) Pour la paix dans le monde.... Most definitely a citizen of the world. I ordered a custom JE SUIS CHARLIE t-shirt last week which should be ready tomorrow. |

One could fall back on the title, Café SETI, Chris. If it were the Pub SETI, things could get a little murky. :oD |

Romano Prodi, former president on the European Commission, said yesterday that it is the time to move from emotions to political actions. The first thing to do is the creation of an European Army, the dream of De Gasperi and Schuman, which was scuttled by France. Technically we already have one. Its just that no one ever uses them. Aside from that, what would an European army in this case solve? |

Ciao Tullio Eurocorps - EU combat armor corps You may be aware that the EU has rapid response units of combat soldiers, including Swedish. These are called "battle groups". Far less known is the permanent European army. Eurocorps comprises 60,000 soldiers. Brigadier General Helmut Neubauer "I believe strongly in the European army. No Europe without an European army". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurocorps http://www.eurocorps.org/ The Pen and the Sword. http://www.dn.se/kultur-noje/kulturdebatt/pennan-och-svardet/ "It's not that hard to shoot cartoonist, but it's impossible to shoot the cartoons." |

We do have the Euro Miltary which seems to be based upon co-operation, and of course Nato, and there are various individual country Squads, but as I understand it there isn't a single international force like the UN blue helmets with boots on the ground. There are various multinational units within Europe and there are the EU battlegroups which are under EU command. All of them have boots on the ground capabilities, its just that most of the time, those boots are firmly planted in their headquarters/base. Having those units exist is one thing, but to actually deploy them is quite another. Thing is, once you have an army consisting of troops from various countries, all those countries are going to be involved in the decision to deploy them. Also, the UN model is an incredibly ineffective and inefficient model. They barely work as peacekeepers, they would break apart if tasked with a more offensive combat role. I mean, you can't just throw a bunch of soldiers from various countries together, put one guy on top of it and call it an army. That just doesn't work all that well. So setting up an European army next to the national army is not going to be all that effective. In order to get a real, European army, you would need to get rid of national armies and replace it with the European army. And that is, even after Paris, politically impossible. Also, one has to ask, what exactly would that accomplish? How is an European army going to stop terrorists any more effectively than a national army? |

Eurocorps belongs to EU and is therefore not international but multinational. To counter terrorist like the IS it's about time to upsize the military capacity. |

Maybe, but it'll have 20 political masters & therein lies the problem, especially where Europe is concerned. |
