In 2002 it was possible to run seti@home from Terminal on OSX :

Is this still viable or is BOINC the only way to crunch numbers for SETI today? Just starting out (again- 1997 was the last time!?) and Terminal running a background process now would suit my workflow well. And working on system level, perhaps OS upgrades wouldn't break BOINC?

SETI can only be run through BOINC, it cannot be run directly or separately. You can, however, run BOINC from a terminal window, though BOINC automatically spawns the science application at the lowest priority supported by the OS, so running from a terminal window loses most of its advantages.
