Can I run my amd r9 type gpu's when the ambient temp is above 80F as long as the gpu's temp is under 75-80C? merle - vote yes for freedom of speech |

The GPU temp is a single measurement taken wherever AMD decided was a good spot. IOW it does not necessarily guarantee that some other component on the card remains cool enough. But slightly above 80F ambient should not be a problem. The professional approach would use a well calibrated Infrared non-contact thermometer to see just how warm different areas of the card get. The card vendor ought to have done that while laying out the cooling solution, otherwise thay might get a lot of RMAs. But there's always a conflict between careful engineering and the pressure to get to market ASAP. Joe |

It depends on the design of the cooling. With reference design i would be careful like Joe mentioned. Sapphires VaporX or TriX cooling is different because the whole card is cooled. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

It depends on the design of the cooling. Aha, the plot thickens! merle - vote yes for freedom of speech |

It depends on the design of the cooling. That's what it boils down to. With crappy cooling a card may reach it's thermal limit with temperatures as low as 25°c. With good cooling the same card maybe able to run without thermal limiting in temperatures as high as 40°c. Grant Darwin NT |
