Message 1604053 - Posted: 22 Nov 2014, 15:06:48 UTC

I have recently purchased a new computer. I reinstalled BOINC and VirtualBox and expected them to work correctly. However, after reinstalling VirtualBox I had a dialogue box saying the following:

"The installation of Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.3.12 (x64) appears to have failed. Do you want to continue the installation?"

I clicked "Yes" to continue to install the BOINC manager. However, once BOINC manager was installed and running it says "No work available to process" at the top of the screen.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled both BOINC and VirtualBox several times to see if it makes any difference. However, I am still having the same problem.

My Java is up-to-date. I have tried everything I can think of to get the BOINC manager working correctly, but nothing seems to make any difference.

I am waiting for a decent graphics card to be installed, which should be done sometime within the next week.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit; my processor is an Intel i7; and I have 16GB RAM.

Can anybody help with this problem?

Thanks

Two things:

1. "No work available to process" is literally what it means. There's a note on the front page indicating some database issues that has caused SETI to dry up.

2. SETI@home doesn't require VirtualBox, so I wouldn't worry about getting it to work unless you have a different project that requires it.

Thank you for your reply.

When I check my account, it shows that there are 30 tasks in progress, which contradicts the statement "No work available to process". The link below shows the tasks that have been sent.

Two of your computer snagged work at the beginning of the week. The third is out of work. SETI currently has no work has far as I can tell.

Having tasks "in progress" and retrieving new tasks are two separate things. That your other hosts have work and your third is failing to get some is not a contradictory situation. If and when those other hosts finish up their work and attempt to get more, they will receive the same message if the database problem isn't fixed at SETI by then.

My account page had duplicate records for my current computer (for some unknown reason). Once I merged these records BOINC started processing the work that had apparently been sent.

Which means the server re-sent work to you which it thought you already had. Once that work dries up, you will begin receiving the No Work Available message again.

I have noticed that my account page still shows a record of my old computer, which is no longer in use since I now have a new computer. Is there any way to delete this computer from my account?

My computer has finished all tasks that the server re-sent so I am receiving the "No work available to process" message again.

I'm curious, do you know why the work has dried up or how long it will be before more work is available?

You must wait for all workunits that are assigned to that computer to be completed. Once there are no tasks listed for that computer, you can click on the Computer ID and at the bottom of the page there will be a "delete" option.

Once that work dries up, you will begin receiving the No Work Available message again.

:-) As I said in my first post to you, the SETI team is having some database issues. You can read all about it in Dr. Korpela's News posts:

What's happening... (Nov 8, 2014)

Taking longer than expected (Nov 13, 2014)

Status Update (Nov 19, 2014)

Another Update (Nov 21, 2014)

There is no definite date as to when the server database issues will be fixed.
