Interesting radio program segment on altruism.

"...In other words, is it possible to ever do something solely for the benefit of others, or is there always some consideration that benefits the self?"

They talk about several very interesting studies about people's inherent generosity and selfish(less)ness.
There is not a transcription sadly, but the episode can be listened to freely as it's a public radio program.
