Journalist Who Contracted Ebola Now Disease Free

The freelance cameraman who contracted Ebola while working with NBC in Liberia is now disease free, he tweeted today.

Ashoka Mukpo was transported from Liberia to the Nebraska Medical Center's biocontainment center on Oct. 6.

The medical center announced today that he was free of the disease and would be released from the hospital on Wednesday.

U.S. to funnel travelers from Ebola-hit region through 5 airports

(Reuters) - The United States ratcheted up its safeguards against Ebola on Tuesday, requiring travelers from three countries at the center of an epidemic in West Africa to fly into one of five major airports conducting enhanced screening for the virus.

The restrictions on passengers whose trips originated in Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea were announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and were set to go into effect on Wednesday. The precautions stop well short of the travel ban sought by some U.S. lawmakers to prevent further Ebola cases in the United States.

It's hard to know whether they have a cure when 40% of those who contract the virus recover without special treatment. Let's hope they are close to something that will prevent an individual from coming down with the virus.

Amber Joy Vinson contacts in Ohio grow to 159; still no Ebola cases

AKRON, Ohio -- The number of Ohioans known to have come into contact with Ebola patient Amber Joy Vinson grew by 17 Tuesday to 159.

The increase comes as state health officials continue interviews to determine who may have had contact with Vinson while she visited the Akron area to prepare for her wedding. The number fell from Sunday to Monday as officials discovered some contacts left Ohio.

Ebola serum for Africa patients within weeks, says WHO

Serum made from the blood of recovered Ebola patients could be available within weeks in Liberia, one of the countries worst hit by the virus, says the World Health Organization.

Speaking in Geneva, Dr Marie Paule Kieny said work was also advancing quickly to get drugs and a vaccine ready for January 2015.

The Ebola outbreak has already killed more than 4,500 people.

Most of the deaths have been in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The partnership which is moving the quickest will be in Liberia where we hope that in the coming weeks there will be facilities set up to collect the blood, treat the blood and be able to process it for use”

Dr Marie Paule Kieny WHO assistant director general for health system and innovation

Dr Kieny, WHO assistant director general for health system and innovation, said: "There are partnerships which are starting to be put in place to have capacity in the three countries to safely extract plasma and make preparation that can be used for the treatment of infective patients.

This information is on CDC, Website.

Recovery from Ebola depends on good supportive clinical care and the patient’s immune response. People who recover from Ebola infection develop antibodies that last for at least 10 years.

rosetta@home is supposed to be working on a cure for Ebola, but I haven't
received any "ebo" units, yet, that I can recall. Perhaps, somebody else
has had the honors.

I'm sorry, but I can't help you there as it's been a long time since my CPU's have had to call on that backup project here to know. ;-)

Cheers.

Well, thanks for the supportive words, anyway, Wiggo. I'll just wait -- it
shouldn't be as long a one, as we probably will have, until he next "WOW"

The serum is called ZMapp. It has never been tested on humans before:

Until that doctor took it and healed miraculously:

They HAVE to fly that stuff over to Africa!!

Really still Experimental, and it is unknown if the Survivor's would have recovered without it.

Let's HOPE it has some effect.

It had some effect on that doctor and it saved the Spanish nurse too. What I don't understand is why the CDC didn't use ZMapp earlier...

Government regulation in short Julie. FDA(along with alot of other departments)have been taken over with Obama agenda. More regulations. It's very difficult now to get government approval to bring any medication to market. They have even gone back and are requiring medications that we have used for the last 20 years to submit studies and documentation for their continued use. This has caused a lot of drugs to be removed from the market. In other cases, it eliminated competition from manufactures as the government gave sole patent to 1 company, leaving 4 others to close since they could not longer manufacture it. In short, the government is deciding (among it's political contributors) who gets a MONOPOLY on certain drugs. There are shortages of meds, meds no longer manufactured here and even shortages of saline in the USA. People here haven't yet seen the extend that this is going to affect them. Hospitals are scrambling trying to find new sources of supplies. But I digress. You have to have Special Permission from the FDA to administer any experimental drug to anyone for any reason. CDC just can't give it to anyone. It has to jump through all the hoops and barrels. In this case, The Christian Charity was able to use it's lobbyist to get the FDA to allow use, then the Christian Charity paid the company for it and flew it to Africa. Nothing is free in this world.

Zmapp is an experimental drug that was used against ebola.
There was enough of the drug available to treat 7 patients, two of which subsequently died.
The present production process for Zmapp takes months to produce a few hundred to a few thousand doses.
Alternate processes for Zmapp production are being explored with the hope of making the drug available in large quantities if it works, which is still not known.

A serum treatment derived from the blood of Ebola survivors will be used in the coming weeks with the hope that antibodies in the serum may help fight infection.

At least two possible vaccines are being tested as inoculants against further spread.

U.S. President Barack Obama stated on August 6, 2014, "I think we have to let the science guide us".

Sounds like a pretty good agenda to me.

THIS also looks like a pretty good agenda to me! :)

Where did you get the information on the 7 patients the drug was treated on? Can you provide a link?

This comment on the page linked above attracted my attention:

Some people in Africa think that this was started deliberately.
It wouldn't surprise me, there's lots of money to be made now.

@297902: found it:

http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/519342/Ebola-USA-Dallas-Homeless-Man-Panic-Thomas-Duncan-ZMapp-Supplies

Of the seven people who have been treated with ZMapp, only two have died.

That makes a survival percentage of what, 86% (my math isn't that good, correct me if I'm wrong)

Thing is, they shouldn't have ran out in the first place, a lot of casualties would have been saved then.
