Guess you havn't seen "Day After Tomorrow", where New York City is over-run by a huge wave.

wasn't there a couple of movies or mini series a few years back about astoroids and the insueing tsunamis that they created. I fully expected to here of the astoroid impact possability theories by now. gues the media is holding off till rateing begin to fall on this thing first.

I've been trying to stay on top of the news related but I am getting tired of all the foriegners complaining as well. at least they have something to come home too. I would prefer to hear of the ones that live there and the things that they now have to overcome than what reporters or travelers have to say. Since it is their back yard I would believe it more than what a traveler has to say or what a reports want us to hear.

I would also find it had to leave my vacation early for myself and not stay and help. I commended Author C. Clark on this already.
And I'd like to commend NA as well. I plan to gather up food to give tomorrow as I go out of town. Given your experience. I'm not even goin to try the ARC unless it is a last resort but I'm goin to do a search tonite for places in my city that I can donate food or cloths.

Guess you haven't lived under Ghouliani, where New York City is over-run by a fascist pig - 2810 days he's a prick, one day he does his job, and now he's a hero?

I digress.

Last I heard they got $18M. Good luck with the serach, and happy new year!

You DARE to blaspheme the name of the Great J? How dare you! How terribly... honest.

Next thing you know you'll be critical of the other "hero" who was so impressive in leadership as to fly to the area, grab a bullhorn, and make a speech.

Hell, yeah! You can't get good-quality bootlegs or a decent pretzel on the street anymore! A jaywalking fine is $100, but heaven forbid you don't have shelter and hafta sleep in a park - Then they lock you up for two years!

The only reason why Guliani is so tame now is because of the hormone-replacement therapy for his prostate cancer.

Next thing you know you'll be critical of the other "hero" who was so impressive in leadership as to fly to the area, grab a bullhorn, and make a speech.
Bullhorn: (n.) Speaker full of shit. Ex.: "We pledge you $9B in federeral aid." (GWB 9/13/01) -> "Where's our federal aid?" (Bloomberg to 9/11 comission, 5/19/04)

They had better be quick in spending the US aid dollars. In the not to distant future the US dollar will be on partity with the Mexican peso.

I would say that 350 million should shut up the critics.

If only the US dollar was worth anything these days. :(
See for yourself at the Reuter's currency calculator

Anyway, the official estimated count is now approaching 150,000 dead. I can't imagine so many dead in one 24 hour span in my lifetime.

In other news, Canada forgives a billion dollars in debt to tsunami hit nations.

It's a temporary thing not forgiveness of debt!

The moratorium, to stay in effect for the foreseeable future, will suspend payments on nearly $1 billion in debt owed to Canada by Tsunami-hit countries

Sea floor displacement was at 1250km long (your numbers) and that shifted 10 meters up. Pics in the paper today show a tsunami wave riding piggyback on another. Last reports has the toll at 150,000.

I think theres some confusion going on about the distances moved by the ocean floor. According to the US Geological Survey the ocean floor did shift 10m but this was a transverse movement. The uplift is given as 2m.

To quote a small part of the USGS info;

"From the size of the earthquake, it is likely that the average displacement on the fault plane was about fifteen meters. The sea floor overlying the thrust fault would have been uplifted by several meters as a result of the earthquake."

They have a couple of good articles;

1. Technical details - here
2. FAQ about this event - here

I just found it weird that this catastrophe seems to have been forgotten. I find it weird that WordWhiner has the time to be on his crusade here on this board? Shouldn't he be out to help the victims for this catastrophe as a good Christian, as he claims he is? Or does his charity not go to these??? Is saving some souls posting on a scientific website board more important??? I just wondered!
