With everyone on here trying to find a next BotD or a LfoD, I am wondering what you all think about that earthquake and following tsunami that killed up to 75,000 people.

I have donated 50 euros to the Red Cross for the victims of this disaster and still think I have not done enough.

Would you mind direct Red Cross advert links on these boards for you to click on, or donate on?

Or would you be so cold hearted and either immediately request for them to be removed?

Since Seti looks for Aliens with a diversity of people from all over the World, I can't think of anyone being so coldhearted to be against it. But that's up to you to decide.

I concurr - It's your thread. I'd just ask that you cover all the bases, like the UN relief agencies, Oxfam, Red Cross and Crescent, Medic Sans Frontier, et al.

You're getting warmer... *L*

Actually, think of it this way: What would you rather have the aliens see us do, ignore them or help them?

@Misfit. You read accusations where there are none. Might be time to relax for you and others chasing ghosts.

I wrote that one line especially going against those people who want us all to pray for our Saviour in this time of need. Even while I believe, I doubt Jesus will put in 50 bucks to the Red Cros for me to actually help those people out there!!

@NEoA'dam: They may follow what we're doing and see us help our own kind. :)

I doubt he had 50 shekels. As for a red cross... I think he'd be a bit weary of a big bloody "t".

That's the spirit!

It's just that after WW, we've become conditioned like Pavlov's dogs to doubt first and accept later.

...

I had something else to say but it's just escaped me.

Thanks Keith. :)

I've been trying to find Janus his email address to point to this thread, but can't find it for the life of me on boinc.dk. I don't read Danish. ;)

So maybe someone else in the know can ask him or any other kind of Amdin/Mod on here what to do about it.

I do feel quite sad about the 1000's of peaple dead and in distress because of
this natural desaster. I will go to oxfam or red cross and donate tomorrow.

Not sure. I'm wondering what happened with Chile - Not only are they mostly costal, and I've yet to hear about anything from the archipelagoes, but they're overdue for a trembler... :-/

I think it's time for USGS or whoever it is that does satellite mapping to start comparing ocean floor elevations.

I just heard 60K with 1M displaced :-(

On the BBC they say it was a 9.0 on the ricter scale. To give an idear of how
powerful that is the scale's top is 10.0 and I do not think there has been an
eathquake at ten. Each point of the scale is 10 times stronger that the last.
So 4 is ten times more powerfull then 3. I think ?

Aparently 1200 Km of land moved along the quake. They do not state how far
(This was from sky news) .

I just hope that any one who had Friends or Family in the area can find them... and if not, I wish those that were lost a {nondenominationalnonreligiousnondeityspecific} Speed! You WILL be missed!

@Misfit, and Misfit only, what do you make of someone who's not an native English language speaker that apparently makes the stupid mistake at trying to not making a mistake after he's been reading the enormous upheaval of just general and simple threads, to come across your path?

Since you simply can't believe your luck at finding me posting this without a word of trying to pull you into my church, you expect you can live with attacking me on other simple words I may have miswritten, yet that you have misread or misunderstood?

Since this is my own thread, I think I can attack you for feeble things you feel you are correct in, yet I think you are overreacting in. Please read the following: Get a life!

And if you don't have anything interesting to mention in this thread, then just don't read it and go post in another one.

Thousands of people are dying on the other side of the world, but you attack me on semantics??

I'd comment, but Ageless has directed the conversation @ Misfit only. I will say this, however: happy 300th post.

Getting back to topic: 1200Km is a huge chunk of land! Then again, anything that SKY reports I have to double-check.

I just had an eeire thought: How long until there's a tsunami flick?

Remember how after Shoemaker-Levy 9 we got a lot of asteroid films? Hollywood is going to really suck this up...

Message 58155 - Posted: 29 Dec 2004, 7:00:17 UTC - in response to Message 58145.

A few final words, them I'm going back to bed.

A tale is told about Dr. Robert Oppenheimer. It goes like this: He sat in an enclosed room one day with only a small beam of light piercing through the darkness. He kept his eyes affixed to the point of light against the wall for hours on end. When the small speck of illumination shook, he knew.

He asked several of the higher-ups in the military for confirmation, but they told him nothing. Still, that shaking speck on the wall said everything: Hiroshima was no more.

This is conjured up a chain reaction of thought:
(1) Hiroshima was a ten kiloton trinitrotoluene-equivalent bomb.
(2) Many multi-megaton missiles are at the ready.
(3) Hiroshima's blast must have been felt as a level 2~3 richter event in Los Alamos.
(4) The Richter scale is logarithmic, so it represents a force of 100-1,000 [insert correct unit here]
(5) The tsunami was caused by a 9.0 richter - a force of 1,000,000,000 [insert correct unit here] at the epicenter.
(6) Taking a wild, unreasonable guess, a 10M-ton explosion would probably be felt as a 9.0 richter the same distance away as Oppenheimer was from Japan. (I'm figuring that Richter=log[tonnage]-1, which must be totally wrong)

Just try to imagine a nuclear-induced tsunami.

Kinda makes one feel rather... powerless, doesn't it?

I'm going to try to go back to sleep. It's futile with that sober thought running through my head, but I'll try.

Red Crecsent: 80,000 confirmed dead, expected to rise to 100,000 by year's end. The news just keeps getting worse...

I got the clothing and tinned food, so I'm off to the drop point. Talk to you all later!
