Here's my couple of thoughts.

First off, the numbering system was supposed to reflect the major version on the kernel. 7 was planned to be NT 7.0, but because they fell so far behind on development for XP's long-overdue successor, Vista got pushed out before it was really ready and was lacking a lot of the promised features. So that gave them another year or so to finish making it what it was supposed to be and they pushed 7 out as a "replacement," but it was more of just.. a service pack, but had too many new things to really be considered a service pack. Hence why 7 is NT 6.1 instead of NT 7.0.

So then you would think windows 8 would have become NT 7.0, but no. Windows 8 was originally just supposed to be 7, optimized for tablets and portable devices, and then they kind of just.. shoved it onto everything and gave everyone a touch-screen optimized interface, even if you didn't have a touch screen, which made it cumbersome to use. However, the performance improvements are pretty nice, and that's because they went back to the older way of doing things: it's all based on C(++) instead of .NET like win7 is. .NET has a lot of overhead and is bulky, but C runs with a smaller footprint and more efficiently, making it ideal for embedded/portable devices.

But since the gripes and complaints about the whole Metro tile interface were causing the general public to frown, they rushed out with another "update" (much like vista -> 7) that should have been present from the start, which went back to a more traditional interface for those devices that use these ancient things called a "keyboard" and a "mouse." That seemed to quell the irritation of the masses. NT 6.03, which means it is still--code wise--Vista, with a lot of improvements made, but nothing revolutionary.

Personally, I have yet to see win8.1 in person, let alone use it, but from what I've heard, it is basically a more efficient 7 with some new useful (to someone, surely) features. I never planned on getting 8.1 though. I am/was planning on keeping 7 pretty much forever, much like I did for XP (I used XP up until early 2013).

I knew Microsoft would be planning the next "big thing" but I figured it would be more of the same of 8.. some fancy interface that is amazing for tablets and phones, but just cumbersome and awful for those of us who insist on using a keyboard and mouse, and of course.. strip even more power user features out of it to dumb it down for the masses.

Having said that.. I'm actually looking forward to 10. It looks like it has good promise for being quite functional and intuitive. I don't know yet how many power user features have been stripped out of it, or hidden under some 20-step chain to get there (remember the days of double-clicking a NIC icon in the tray and seeing the status of that NIC, and then being able to see the IP address details? In 7, you have to go through 3 more obstacles before you can get to that information).

Of course, I'm like most people.. I'll wait until SP1 before attempting to try it, so that means probably ~2017 or so. But it looks promising this time around. (I held onto 2000 Pro until about 2009 or so when I started having too many problems with software requiring XP SP2, so I reluctantly upgraded, then liked it. Then repeated that cycle with holding onto XP because I refused to touch Vista, or even 7, but I started using 7 on my laptop a little bit and decided I actually liked it, even with the power user features I really like being hidden/removed. So of course, now that I'm on 7, I refuse to touch 8/8.1, but this time around, unless 10 turns out to be awful, I'm looking forward to it.)

Oh yeh i forgot about vista so the title to the thread should be
WIN 7 ate 9 & 10 & spit out 11 but they can't count @ Microsoft , so we will get stuck with 10 when it should be 11 .

Where's Bill Gates he needs to send everyone back to school and take back the Pilot's seat at MS
