It looks as if my oldest cruncher is about to expire :-(
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7047761
is showing signs that the GPU (a venerable GTX460) is succumbing to too many hours of being too hot...
Its been crashing regularly for the last couple of weeks.
Dust bunnies have been exorcised, drivers reloaded, drivers updated all to no avail. I set it to "no new tasks" to clear the cache, and once there was no GPU work left it has run without problems.
So the plan is to empty the cache, then set GPU crunching OFF for a few days to make sure the CPU is "happy", then I'll set the GPU to work for a bit before finally administering the last rights on the GPU...

Now what to replace that GPU with? I want to stay "all Nvidia", so its a choice between a GTX760, or wait a short while and go for a GTX960 (I don't want to step up to a GTX780 or GTX980 on this cruncher as the price step is just a bit too much due to a trip to the USA grabbing my "spare" cash...)

If you're considering the GTX 760, you might also want to look at the GTX 670. When I did that last December, I ultimately decided that the 670 had a slight edge in both performance and price, and that's what I ended up choosing (a used one however, from eBay, but I've been quite pleased with it). Of course, prices may have changed since December, so my comparison may not hold.

Chris:
PSU is the newest bit of this cruncher, only about a year old 700w silverstone, so should be "well up to it". The quoted max power on a GTX760 is about 30 watts more than a GTX460, so I think the psu will be up to it....

Jeff:
It is getting "quite hard" to get a new GTX670 in the UK (indeed most GTX6xx are getting hard to get over here) - the only place I could quickly find a gtx670 is quoting 260gbp, compared with my normal supplier wanting about 200gbp for a GTX770, or 150gbp for a GTX760 (and ???gbp for a gtx960) or 250gbp for a GTX970 - which makes the gtx670 look to be a poor deal....

Since its going to be over a month before I have to make the leap the prices and availability could go in any direction (probably up and down respectively....)

(Things have changed in the last month or so, as the new GTX9xx family have started to arrive the 4xx, 5xx and 6xx are being killed off by Nvidia to make space for the new stuff)

Is that a BSOD crash or a driver crash?

And... I know you didn't ask, but from what I think I am seeing from some who are reporting in the background, you really might want to wait for the 900-series to "fill-out" before you buy something new. It would appear it is *much* more efficient (I don't mean draws less power; which it does. I mean it produces much more work per watt when optimized.)

The cards are brand new, so that conclusion is not ready for prime-time, but it "looks like it is tending that way." If it is true, you could save the cost of the card in power pretty quickly over a comparably numbered 600 or 700 series card.

Must be hard being across the pond. The hardware costs are ⬆️ compared to North America. Looked up the price for a new GTX 760. Depending on what bells and whistles you want. It is between 135.35gbd to 178.41gbd at today's current exchange rates. Looked at tigerdirect.com and newegg.com.

Never seen it do it - its a headless monster (and has been so for three years). Its a dead stop, arrive home, check the state of my crunchers and find that it has stopped, try to attach over the network, or via a KVM, and it is powered off. After the first few events I plugged a spare monitor in so I could see if it was actually running (and most days when I got in from work it wasn't), so power cycled it and it rebooted via the "windozes suffered a crash message.... so probably blue screen. (inertia rules on looking at the event logs...)

Your comments about the 9xx family are one of the reasons why I'm considering doing a few tests then condemning the GTX460 then CPU only until I see the "real" price of a GTX960 in the UK...

US prices are not really that far off what I can pay - the price range is about 140gbp to 200gbp (I live really close to one of the cheaper outlets, and regularly drive past another one, so no shipping, just the cost of a call to check stock before I arrive)

Well, it happened, last night the ailing PC stopped never to restart again.
I had hoped it would struggle on until I get back from the USA in a few weeks time, but sadly it had other ideas :-(
The cache was of course nearly full, so I apologise to my wingmen for this delay in processing those tasks.

I was wondering if you had considered 2 nvidia 750 ti's?

I did, but the funds are there for something more substantial - starting point is a gtx980 which in terms of specified power demand and reported throughput is about the same as a pair of gtx750i, but leaves enough space for two more of the beasts....
Fortunately the disks have survived, but the motherboard and gtx460 are somewhat fried. New bits arrived, with the exception of the cooler which I forget to order. That will be sorted tomorrow (why are the stock coolers so weedy????).
Then its out with the screwdrivers and have a big reshuffle of bits in the my crunchers - only one will remain as it is today - the current "king", the one with a pair of gtx780.

More news when I get home later in the weekend....
