To go hand-in-hand with the "what's for Breakfast" & "lose weight" threads.

Nostalgia

"A cold bottle of milk has a certain integrity to it and the glass retains that."

Have to agree with that. Throughout the years living in London, we used to be able to get R White's range of drinks in glass bottles. Their Cream Soda was delicious, especially when poured over a bowl of ice cream :-)

However, for years it was not available up here, but recently it started appearing in shops. The 1st day I bought one, I felt it had something lacking. All I can think of was it was the plastic bottle it was in.

Anyone else detect that difference?

I remember all the many years ago when a boy could go out
on to the ice of the Gulf of St. Lawrence for a seal so he
could make a few dollars for Christmas presents.......

I loved the returnable 16 ounce bottles of soft drinks! They came in cardboard containers of 8, and we got a few cents back when we returned them to the store. They got washed back at the soft drink manufacturer, and refilled. We even had nice stoppers so you could save what you didn't finish out of one bottle. And yes... I think all beverages taste better dispensed from glass.

I should perhaps join in here with a comment
on my latest tasteless remark on Canadian
food choices from the years just after the
war. I will add a part of what I recently
wrote to a very good friend of mine about
this subject:

"On the south shore of Nova Scotia in the
1950s there were hundreds of tar paper shacks along the
road from our house to Lunenburg. In the early years after
the war, times were hard for every one."

Coke (and other soft drinks) from a can tastes like something died in it... and from a plastic bottle - like something was embalmed in it... or is it the other way round? I can't remember now. Been a long time since I've had one out of anything other than a glass bottle - which has fortunately returned to the shelves, at a higher price of course.

Irresponsible adult alert!! Do not do this at home without parental guidance...

All the sweets they've taken the e-numbers out of don't taste anywhere near as good either. I think if you're 40 or over you should be ALLOWED them in your sweets as a right :) It might have been what kept us safe in all those concreted over playgrounds we crashed to earth in as children... now the ground has to be bouncy because the children are not :)

We have noticed a distinct flavor difference between sodas that have corn syrup as a sweetener and the same sodas that have sugar as a sweetener. The ones with sugar taste so much better - doesn't matter whether they come in a can, or plastic or glass...

I actually was disappointed with the sugar based Mexican Coca Cola I bought, recently. It didn't taste as sweet to me as the fructose version.
