My ASRock x58 extreme has one screw missing, I just discovered. It is the one at the top left of the mobo. It worried me so I contacted ASRock and they said they had no more available. My question is are the mobo screws interchangeable, that is, of a standard size and where might I get one? Worried about a vibrating death I am. |

My question is are the mobo screws interchangeable, that is, of a standard size and where might I get one? I think most of us have a few loose screws... oh you mean real ones... :P If you are talking about the screws that hold the motherboard to the chassis those are pretty common screws in various computer uses. It will be either an M3x5, or M3x6. If you have screws holding down the slot covers to the chassis they could work & you could just steal one from there. You could also move a screw from a more secure location to there. There should be on in about the middle of the MB near the back of the system. Probably under where the video card is located. You could move that one to the top. As that portion of the MB is less prone to vibration with a video card holding it down. If the screw was there before and came out it might b e rolling around in the chassis somewhere, or on the MB itself. Which could short something out. With the system off rolling around or shaking the chassis may reveal it. If you don't have any extra screws from anything you can purchase a small kit of screws. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5H61T29345&cm_re=motherboard_screw_kit-_-9SIA5H61T29345-_-Product http://www.amazon.com/Link-Depot-Accessory-Computer-Screws/dp/B0017S5D5G/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1410708622&sr=8-8&keywords=motherboard+screw+kit Alternatively if you see an old PC being thrown away you could grab it. Then gut it for extra screws, standoffs, & fans. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

Can you remove one of the other screws and take it down to your local computer store, radio shack or lowes or Home Depot and see if they have something similar? One of my builds I didn't have enough screws so I just went down to Altex and asked them if they had some. I now have a box here that I keep all the extras screws that come in the boxes in case I need one. |

I use old prescription medicine bottles to store various things like screws, stand offs, jumpers, diodes, & various other electrical parts. I even put labels on some of them. It is sort of like using old jelly jars for screws in a wood shop I suppose. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

Thanks Zalster, Yeah, I'll take out one of the screws and see if I have one around here, but I do need that box of computer screws anyway. I try to avoid making extra trips to the store but I may need to. |

I've been dumpster-diving for the better part of 15 years now. My garage got a bit out of hand and I was finally given the ultimatum to consolidate a lot of it. So I got my cordless drill and set to work gutting everything that I had (I mean, come on.. there's no realistic reason to even attempt to turn on a Pentium 66 that uses EDO RAM, and there's no reason to even still have something like that anymore). Long story short, when it was all said and done, I had 600 pounds of steel carcasses that I hauled to the recycling yard and got 10.5 cents/pound for (I even cracked optical/floppy drives open for the metal casing), and about 20 pounds of screws of all shapes and sizes, and about 500 jumpers in about 30 colors. I think I'm set for life on that front. :p OP: every single screw attaching the board to the mounting points is not 100% mandatory. Yes, you should use them all, but you don't have to. The ones around the edges are the most important, so just take one from the middle somewhere and move it to the missing one on the edge. Sometimes not all of the stand-offs are for screws & there could be some that a guide posts. I had forgotten about them until I was swapping out an older microATX with a mini-ITX the other night. I put the board in & looked to make sure I had 2 of the 4 holes lined up. I loosely put in 2 screw & then started to make sure the rest were lined up. I got to the post & my brain just stopped for a moment. Saying "one of these things is not like the other". If you need screws, and don't have the right diameter/thread combination (there are two threads, coarse and fine, for every diameter...) try to go to a Fry's Electronics, (assuming you live near one...) which have little packets of various diameter screws for the CPU builder. .
