My old UBUNTU crashed upon upgrading...So I put a New Keyboard, Mouse and an old HD 4770 Video card in and am still doing updates. So far so good.
My main question is do I need to free a core to use the HD 4770 card for crunching?

Bear in mind that there is no stock Linux app, so you'll need to use a third-party one. But yes, it is recommended to free a CPU core for all AMD/ATi graphics cards.
