There was a broadcast tonight on PBS about the phenomenon of the Like generation. I only watched a few minutes of the program but it was enough to scare the wits out of an old phart like me. Facebook, to me, is offensive but it is essential to the lives of my nieces and nephews. Now all a retailer has to do is get enough people to like them on Facebook and their fortune is made. Then there is the other side of the coin unliking someone or something. If you decide to like something and then later find you have made a mistake you either leave things as is or press the unlike button which can open a whole new can of worms..

I saw an advertisement for a company that not only will design a Facebook page for a company but will comment and hype the company.

And thats why as an official old guy. I refuse to even get on facebook or twitter or what ever else is out there.
My 5 daughters and 13 grandkids should be thakfull that I text them. And no they dont have to text me first. I am slowly moving out of the Luddite phase. But I still think facebook is a farce. Its a marketeering advertising mining wet dream.
And if your own kids cant even take the time to, By sending a text, or an e-mail or heaven forbid a telephone call to give us bad news. Then I give up. I for one do not believe I should have relatives tell me you need to have face book so you know what is going on.
I for one believe common curtisy is being shredded wholesale by the internet. And all for companys who want to profit by targeting us.

Meh, I don't like Facebook but I really don't have much of a choice to use it for now. To much important information goes over Facebook.

As for the whole like and unlike thing, I think people are overstating the problematic implications of it. If you make a big deal over unliking something on Facebook, then that is on you, not Facebook or the 'like' button.

I'm with James.
I don't farcebook, twitter or tweet.
Heck, I don't even text message.

The Seti forums are the only 'social media' that I participate in, other than the occasional comments made on youtube clips.

Hitting "like" can be dangerous...

Facebook privacy challenge

"External website tracking - monitoring members through the Like buttons embedded into third-party webpages."

...something America ought to take on board maybe?

"Instead, he explains, the dispute with Facebook is intended to be a "model case" that sets a precedent addressing the wider problem of tech firm developing products that comply with US laws, but are not adapted for other countries' rules."

Sorry - know I'm late to this thread - but one of the can of worms of "unliking" on facebook led to the death of two teenagers a couple of years ago (separate incidences) near to where I live. Both stabbed... both for "dissing" someone on facebook... with one click on the "unlike" tag. :(

I've heard of those cases Annie. Social media is cruel. I don't facebook or tweet. One can get a backlash here on SETI. Why bother to get kicked out of the it club. I look back at being a moderator here. WOW! Some mean and cruel words were said. I'm so sorry for those words now. :(

DON'T be! :) *strict mode off* ... I know I have no personal experience on which to base this, but from the outside looking in I would say moderating is NOT a walk in the park... oh... um... maybe it is... one strewn with erm... dung... at times :) bound to result in the occasional mutter... :)

I for one have seen the mods make some far better decision than I might have under the same conditions. I recall one time when a thread went where no thread on this board should go but because of the hour and other reasons, the mods let it run. When it was done for the night, the thread safely vanished Nobody was hurt, people got stuff out of their system and no record was left behind. I'm not sure if I had the responsibility of being a mod, I would have let it run to a peaceful conclusion as it did.

Mods aren't paid anything but yet they have to show exceptional judgement doing a thankless job. I think a few slips can be overlooked.
