Hello all. Boinc has been trying to download a new S@H executable unsucessfully for about a month now. Clearly the project servers have not been down that long ... where else should I look for trouble on my machine? Einstein@home has been happily operating during the period.

Here is a typical trace:

8/3/2014 12:38:05 PM | SETI@home | Started download of setiathome_7.00_windows_intelx86__cuda50.exe
8/3/2014 12:38:07 PM | SETI@home | Temporarily failed download of setiathome_7.00_windows_intelx86__cuda50.exe: transient HTTP error
8/3/2014 12:38:07 PM | SETI@home | Backing off 05:30:28 on download of setiathome_7.00_windows_intelx86__cuda50.exe
8/3/2014 12:38:09 PM | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
8/3/2014 12:38:11 PM | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

Are you running any anti-virus? If so, check to make sure Boinc and Seti are excluded from being scanned. Have you tried unattaching from the project and reattaching? Sometimes something gets corrupted or deleted and that might prevent you from connecting. All I can think of at the moment. Give people here a couple of hours to wander through here and give their opinions.

Thanks for having me check the obvious, Zalster. I am using Avast! here, so under "Active Protection" I turned off "File System Shield" "Mail Shield" and "Web Shield". Then from within Boinc Mgr, Transfers tab I clicked the "Retry Now" button. The transfer succeeded immediately.

Note for others using Avast! When turning off the "Shields" select "Stop for 10 minutes" That way it makes it essentially impossible for you to forget to turn them back on. In general, shields are a Good Thing.

You can add the Boinc data directory as an exclusion: see this FAQ on how to do that (used for FAQ: Avast 2013 Free Edition)
