Message 1734018 - Posted: 13 Oct 2015, 20:31:55 UTC - in response to Message 1731662.

Firstly: After the word was jumbled, two letters remained in the correct place. The first of these, you've placed correctly twice. The second... not once.

Secondly: You have also managed...

3 correctly placed letters
1. Pamula Ottey

2 correctly placed letters
2. Meta Layout P
3. Autotype Lam
4. Automate Ply
5. Amputate Loy

1 correctly placed letter
6. Pauley Matto
7. At Au El Om Typ

So what do we have now? MATUT______

The 6th letter can still be E O P
7th can be A E L
8th can be L P Y
9th can be A E O Y

a. The 3 correct are all vowels. One is also correct in 6 and another is correct in 7 :)

b. The two correct in 3 are the same. One is the second correct letter in the first with two correct, and the first correct letter in number 4 :) The other is adjacent to the first correct letter in number 5.

c. None of your words have ended with the correct letter.

d. The last correctly placed letter in number 1 is adjacent to the last correctly placed letter in number 4

There! *beam happily* I knew you'd be pleased :)

Okay, okay, let's see what I can make of this. (Maybe winning at Einstein has put you in a better mood. That is, if you have figured out which of your guesses was right.)

Starting with b: The only two letters that there are two of are A and T. Neither A in 3 matches an A in 1, so the two correct in 3 must be the Ts. That also matches up with the next sentence in b.

Blargh! I can think through it easier than I can explain my thinking in writing.

Here's what I have so far: MATUT_O____ Last letter has to be L, A, or E.

Whoops, wait a minute. What I have matches two of the vowels in 7, and only one is allowed to. Where have I gone wrong...?

One is the second correct letter in the first with two correct,

Meaning either the M or the E in 2 is correct.

and the first correct letter in number 4

First two letters are not AU. Not immediately helpful, but maybe later.

The other is adjacent to the first correct letter in number 5.

Meaning that either the fourth letter is U or the sixth is A. Both of those are in those positions in 1, so no help there...

So how did I come up with the rest of what I thought I had? I no longer know.

The 3 correct are all vowels.

The vowels in 1 are _A_U_AO__E_ and three of them are right. Going back to the previous quote, the U and the 2nd A cannot both be right.

An A 2nd matches with two of the originals being right, but that's not conclusive of anything at the moment.

Oh! I know where I got some of these others.

vowels. One is also correct in 6 and another is correct in 7 :)

The only vowel that matches between 1 and 6 is the A 2nd. Jumping to a different clue, that means the 2nd letter is not E and therefore the 1st is M. Coming back to here, the U and the O both match between 1 and 7. One of them is wrong, but I plugged both of them in as right and then realized I had a problem. Did I do that by mistake, or did something else lead me to them...?

Let's eliminate some known unknowns.

P_M_L__TT_Y
___O_YPELAM
___A_AYOLTP
___OMATE__Y
_____ATEL_Y

Ah hah. We have eliminated A as 6th, so 4th has to be U, which means 7th is not O.

P_ULEYMATTO
ATA_ELOMTYP

So what does this leave as possibles?

6th EOP
7th AEL
8th LPY
9th AEOY
10th ELOP
11th AEL

Each of these letters is in more than one possible location, so nothing can be determined that way.

MATUTOYPEAL - the sound made by an older child's toy bell (that actually doesn't fit, so forget it)
MATUTELYOPA - the name of Matut's Greek restaurant in Ely, Nevada
(just noticed that the Y has to be 8th or 9th, which must be significant, but I'm not sure of what yet)

Wait a mo... Going back to PAMULA OTTEY, there are three correct vowels. Two are already placed, and now two are eliminated, so the E has to be correct.

MATUT____E_

Taking the E out of the other possibles leaves

6 O P
7 A L
8 L P Y
9 A O Y
11 A L

MATUTOAPYEL
MATUTOPLYEA
MATUTOLYPEA
MATUTPAYOEL

All right, before I fry my brain any further, have I taken a misstep somewhere?

Ahem. My rather lengthy post of a few minutes ago was written before the outrage, but just posted now when I got back to my desk. I now see that in the meantime, you have quite blatantly told me that not only do I have the MATUT part right, but also that the end is PEA. This means that, just as you did with my word at Einstein, I have made a correct guess without knowing it.

Kindly tell me, dear lady, what MATUTOLYPEA means.

Meanwhile, the rest of you (and Annie too) can start contemplating

CDDEGHLNNOOOORY

I may even offer a hint as soon as this evening. But I do have other things I need to do besides sit in front of a computer.

Yes, I found it. I was afraid I had left it in when I scrambled it, but it wasn't there in my and Annie's posts. How did you get it so fast?

Anyway, your turn.

That would have been the biggest clue ever in the history of word jumbling :) I did in fact do that once, but noticed it and did an immediate edit.

That was certainly very fast though! Well done Admiral :)

edit@David: we may need to drag him (kicking and screaming if need be) over to einstein at times. NOT YET... I think I'm owed at least some suffering from the minions there... :)

You've inflicted quite a bit of suffering on the minions there already. I almost hesitate to go look today.

Well, I have no idea which one of the following you want, Admiral but here you go:

Scabsinsis - specifically relating to the combined action of the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, and its host's repeated attempts to scratch its little back (in the hope it will then reciprocate) but missing. In doing so, a self-inflicted abrasion injury is suffered instead, often on top of a prior self-inflicted abrasion injury, ad infinitum, and requiring the skin to then attempt to repair itself in it's usual cumbersome and lumpy fashion, whilst lagging behind events quite substantially.

AbsincssSis - (pronounced ab-sinsis sis) urban slang for sending a sister on a wild goose chase for the express purpose of removing her from your vicinity *outraged blink* how mean is that!?

CassisBins - an essential commercial and household receptacle for the placement of blackcurrants that have not only overstayed their welcome, but also started hissing and frothing and rudely growing things on themselves in a fermenting frenzy of goo. Sadly product expansion into other areas (such as cucumber liquification disposal units) failed to materialise after the inventor of Cassisbins, Mr Basscin Sis, suffered amnesia when one of his bins fell on him. He now spends all of his leisure time sitting fully clothed in the bath with an upside down glass bowl over his head, singing ground control to major Tom and believing he is in the issss-cabin (also known as the international space station's space station cabin)

BasicSinss - hamartiologically speaking, almost everything we do or enjoy, that gives us pleasure, is one.

SnicBasis - describes the cause (and subsequent reason for hasty repression of) a foreshortened bout of snickering at someone elses expense. Can result in the emanation of noisy reverberations throughout the nasal passages - not only from the original snickerer but, via the domino effect, well beyond.

The second one is a good start. The jumble is related to David's jumble by leaf.

Amazingly, those are the same letters as Annie's jumble at Einstein.

Yes. My diversion attempt was too late. My minions escaped with only minimal suffering. I suppose when I posted that ostrich at einstein, I should have insisted you planted your head there too, at least for the duration of that word, but never mind :)

I think I'll let her work on this one.

Oh. I see. Then I owe you a proper thank you :) Thank you, David! You're so sweet :)

I kind of feel like the two of us are dominating the thread in both places.

Yes. Worryingly true :( It's troubled me a bit too I must say, so... after seeing your post last night, I thought I too should step aside and let those clamouring to get in, get in.

Some 16 hours later................................................. with the stampede not only over but barely begun... *wave at lurking setizens* :) I thought I'd drop in once more.

Admiral. Related to dendochronology?

Oh, well that's easy *beam happily*:

Abscisniss – (pronounced ab skizzin iss) the science of telling recent events from the leaves of plants – such as: if they've turned a funny colour and started falling off their trees – autumn has arrived; or if they're wilting, they've got a little depressed about there having been not much rain lately; etc.

Hold on... you said:

My jumble has 4 in the right spots.

oh no...

*SIGH*

that one has five... *pause to throw it away*

Oh... and you know that one you said started well – well there were too many s's in it. Something must have gone wrong during my capitalization of the S - where I put one in whilst failing to remove the one I was substituting it with... so I'm going to throw away that one as well... *pause to throw away that one as well*

which means I've got precisely... nowhere...

:)

edit: except you don't know what you're talking about do you anniet? *rummage through bin* five correct against the jumble doesn't mean five correct at all, does it?! NO! *glare harshly into bin* and LOOK! *retrieve scis* It's all broken... and there's two abciinssss plus an extra s to sort out now you... you YOU IDIOT!

*blink@eavesdroppers* I feel it important to give myself the odd peptalk from time to time...

Therapeutic is what it is.

Your definition is not to far off. But I must confess and say that I added one too many "S" in my jumble. You do have most of the word right. So I must go and confess my "sin" in the end. May the Father go easy on this poor soul.
