A U.S. official said the United States believes a surface-to-air missile brought down the Malaysian Airlines passenger jet that crashed on Thursday in eastern Ukraine, killing all 295 people aboard. "This is a tragic day, in what has already been a tragic year, for Malaysia," said the Malaysian prime minister.

My thoughts and prayers go out all those on board :(

U.S. official: Malaysia Airlines plane shot down

(CNN) -- A Malaysia Airlines passenger jet crashed in a rebel-controlled area of eastern Ukraine on Thursday, prompting swift accusations from Ukrainian officials that "terrorists" shot down the aircraft.

The ill-fated plane was flying at an altitude, of 32-33,000 thousand feet.

I know this is being discussed in the Crimea thread, but felt the plane needed a thread :(

BBC- Link, shows more about the plane and missile.

There's a simple answer to this but it's one I'm afraid the moneymen worldwide Will Not Accept.

As soon as a serious conflict erupts, have all airlines boycott the flight zones around that conflict area.

Regardless on whether or not a missile is fired from one country or another, the missile does not respect borders - in it's way, it'll bring you down!

I also fear for U.S. planes, being shot down.

I still think TWA 800, was shot down by a missile.

Boing doesn't think that and they spent much money to address what they thought happened. I suspect their engineers have more aerospace knowledge than you.

How will a Malaysian company paying thousands more in fuel to transport Dutch citizens to Malaysia hurt Putin? Ukraine or Russia don't get a fee for flying over their territory do they?

If Kiev got the fees that may be the reason it was shot down.

In the wake of the crash of Malaysian Flight 17, likely shot down over the Eastern part of Ukraine, several airlines have announced they will be routing flights around Ukrainian airspace. Real-time data from aviation firm FlightRadar24 seems to confirm this: it currently shows just a handful of flights over Ukraine. Many flights appear to be skirting around the eastern and western edges of the country, with just a small handful in Ukrainian airspace proper.

1. In 1984 South Korean passenger plane with 450 people downed by Russian missile.
2. In 2009 Polish government plane with their president and whole Defence management downed in Russian territory. Who were one of highest criticizer of current Russian government.
3. Now this incident inside Russian missile zone.

The pattern is really visible.

It is not spooky but quite precision targeting that not any fighting sides citizens likely flew that plane so the later investigations and disputes would be highly blurry.

A Malaysian passenger plane crashed on Thursday 2014-07-17 in eastern Ukraine, probably after being hit by a rocket.

Why? What is the basis of their jurisdiction?

So far only truth as no Americans have been identified as being on board. That said the Russians would have let them on the site. The site has been looted and contaminated so I see no point.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden Late Thursday evening, Swedish time,
said the same thing - that the plane was shot down by a rocket, it was "not an accident" but that it "was blown out of the sky."

Horrific!
