Gripe,

I don't know what to do about it, but I've mentioned it before. Boinc is a bandwidth hog..Several times during the day while working I have to suspend all activity on Bonic and shut it down in order to access the internet. The minute I do, I can get whatever I need done. This last time, it's blocking my access to my emails. I hate having to start and stop it everytime I need to do something, and no suspending it won't work. I physically have to quit the app. Ok, enough of that, back to crunching...

Perhaps you should set bandwidth restrictions.

Hum ...

Well, I've got a mixed house here. On my Macs I've hardly ever seen a case where upload/download activity causes a serious hiccup. However on the PC this does seem to be an issue. Actually saw it as an issue when one of the Macs was doing the activity and the PC refused to grab any bandwidth. While it was still active I tried a different Mac and had no issue. So I'm suspecting the issue isn't really BOINC but in some way related to the TCP/IP stack implementation on that PC, which is running XP, SP3.

I'm wondering if there is some way the upload/download activity could be separated at the router by QoS to be lower priority than regular web activity?

Kudos: to our developers.

Blaming Boinc?
Look, if you're going to crunch data, you have to get it from the servers to process.
I have recently been imposed by ATT with a 150Gb/month cap on my internet connection. And then they charge me another $10.00/50Gb over that. I am at about 250Gb for the month. That data transfer has to happen over your connection, and perhaps at the expense of whatever else you may be doing at the time. I do use QoS on my router to give preference to my daily driver, which may help somewhat when the other 8 computers are trying to download data.

Gripe? Perhaps that Seti data cannot be more compressed to minimize transfer costs. But that has been discussed more than once before, and apparently is not an effective option.

Kudos? That the Seti servers can, especially since the move to the colo, usually deal with that data transfer for the multitude of computers attached to the project....amazing, when you consider it.

Meow.

Ok, I love Boinc, but...there are some issues..not going to stop me from crunching. For the machine in question, it only has a 0.3 day work buffer with no extra. So that's 4 Aps for the chip and 1 AP for the GPUs. Since its a Mac and it is a dual core with hyperthread to 4 core, I restrict it to only 50% so only 1 AP on chip and the single ap on the GPU. After that it's set to NNT and the preference is set to suspend internet activity. Since I can monitor I/O of data to the network, I can see what apps are accessing the network as well as which ones are hogging the connection. Even with the above setting, Boinc and Boinc Manager are always #1 and #2. Once it get to the point where I can't access the internet and I REALLY need to, I'll have to totally shut it down. No suspending of any sort or changing preferences stops the activity of hogging the access. Once I stop it, Boinc and Boinc manager moved down the list till it finally falls off the list. Once that happens, all other apps can then access the internet.

All that being said, it's not going to stop me from crunching. It's just a Gripe, not a huge problem. And I do appreciate all the work that the developers do in getting these programs to work. But sometimes, you just have to scream into the wind to get it off your chest.

Can we move this discussion of the performance / network issues resulting from BOINC / SETI@Home to Number Crunching, or there will a purging of this thread.

Kudos: The Colocation is great.

Gripe: Credit New really sucks. Other than a slight blip, my RAC has been falling since late June. 51,000 peak, now down to 48,000 & no sign of it even slowing.

Gripes: One little badge is pollution?

It spreads out the threads, makes it harder to find a thread even when it's on the current page as there's about half the threads there used to be on a page now.
And it does make the message board "home" pages (eg Number crunching, Seti Café etc) look crowded/messy. It's somewhat distracting; I would expect it would be very much so for new users.
No problems with them in the threads themselves.
IMHO.

They should be user selectable, I don't want or need to be in any "percentage club" so unfortunately the only way to get rid of the damn thing is to reduce my RAC below 25%.

I can select my green star why not my badge??
