Hi all, I'm living in Florida, which as some of you know has real high lightning strike history. What happens when power goes out? We have power surges, transformers exploding and re-set's just about daily during hurricane season (only once yesterday) Will a sudden power outage loose all the number crunching already done or is there automatic incremental back up to local drive? It would kinda suck to have 4~5 hrs of computer time wasted Thanks PJ |

No automated backups needed, as all the data stays on the hard drive in your computer, even when the power goes down. You'll only lose stuff when the hard drive goes to hardware heaven. That happens about as many times as you personally are struck by lightning... :) |

Thanks, good to know. I did have a hard drive fail without warning last year though, plus, I've had a modem literally blow out of computer due to lightning. (few years ago) Phone lines get hit more frequently than power problems, we used to destroy printers pretty regular |

PJ, Ever thought about getting a Uninterrupted Power Supply for your computer? Not everyone is a fan of them but I have them on most of my computers as we get frequent brown outs as well spikes due to light strikes. Just something to think about. If you do, make sure it more than the power requirement of your computer, nothing worse than hooking it up to the computer and it immediately starts to ring because the computer draws more power than the UPS is supplying. PJ, It depends on how often the power fails. If it is a common occurrence, get one. If it never happens, think about it anyway. BOINC WIKI |

Yep, seriously thought about UPS but I wasn't using desktop very much so it seemed a bit of a waste, lead acid batteries have pretty limited lifespan if not being used 'properly' and even then have limited lifespan - used to teach motorcycle mechanics and lecture about it Sometimes I don't turn desktop on for 3~4 weeks I can use laptop in front of TV (LOL) It would be easier to fabricate a car battery + charger and inverter,(basically whats inside UPS) still an inefficient way of getting power to the beige box though, couple of surge protectors inline work just as well to prevent spike damage |

By the sound of it you suffer more from surges and lightening strikes than cuts, so a decent set of surge protectors and lightening arrestors would be a better investment than a UPS. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |
