I've been using this P3, 500 Win 98 (not SE) machine to crunch for years. I lost the hard drive, reloaded the OS (HP full recovery). Installed all available windows updates. I installed Boinc, attached to the project, downloaded all the right stuff, and started crunching. Here's where the problem comes in. upon reboot I see the B in the task bar while windows is loading, then it disappears. If I click "Start" "programs" "Boinc" "Boinc", I get the message "Boinc GUI" Failed to clean up Window Sockets interface. If I hit "Ctrl""Alt""Del" I see "Boinc not responding".

I remember something along time ago about Winsock??? or something I needed to change to 32 bit, but I can't remember.

Any Ideas????

Thanks

Tony

PS I have tried uninstall, delete Boinc folder and complete reload, but no help.

will look. Thanks. It'll take a bit I have to change puters.

EDIT: Only one Boinc in the Startup part of MSCONFIG.

Any other Ideas?

Try Ctrl-Alt-Dlt to bring up the task manager and verify that only one instance of Boinc and Setiathome4.08 are listed. If only one instance of boinc is running, then try this link to upgrade the DUN on your system:

This "Here" link is to an identical question from back on October. It has no replies for fixing the problem.

EDIT:
Ooops! Something weird happened. I just clicked the link again and there are indeed replies to the question. The first time I clicked the link, all that was displayed was the question. Must have been a hicup, or worse, a great big sneeze.

I followed the link and downloaded and installed the file. I've only rebooted twice. The first I got some new errors (windows errors), but upon the next boot Boinc came up and worked in the task bar. Presently, I'm going to wait for a few more boots before calling it successful. It does look hopeful though, thanks

I find that I get just the same problem with win98 - if boinc needs to send/get data before a reboot. Some times it never shows up (Not responding in the task manager) and some times it times out and shows up. Changing to a manual startup at boot time may help and only start when connected to the internet always seems to work.

Still think seti classic was more fun. (less hassle)
