Message 1547462 - Posted: 25 Jul 2014, 16:32:35 UTC - in response to Message 1547447.

After running through a number of actions intended to enable the thrusters on the ISEE 3, over the last several days, the reboot team has had to concede that they will not be able to bring it back into an orbit near Earth. They still hope to do some science with the spacecraft, as several of its instruments apparently continue to function.
There is some uncertainty about how long they will be able to contact the ISEE 3, as it begins moving away from Earth again, in its independent solar orbit. Much will apparently depend on their ability to access to the Arecibo antenna or NASA's Deep Space Network.

After all their hardwork! :( They must be feeling very dejected. Thanks for all the updates Michael. I'm sure we haven't finished learning all we can from it...

I own $100 worth of ISEE 3 and even though they can't put it back where it belongs, they did get the instrument package turned back on and most of it is still working. It will continue to provide data and they are making long range plans to continue to receive information from it. If you would like to continue to watch the progress, you can find updates here.

The spacecraft is nearing Earth, and will fly very near the Moon on Sunday, Aug. 10th. That close encounter will change its path through space somewhat. Once the new orbit is ascertained, the plan is to use the ISEE 3's sensors to systematically detect gamma ray bursts from deep space. The reboot team seems optimistic about the possibility of remaining in radio contact with the spacecraft on a continuing basis.
