So, I have something new to play with and I installed BOINC on it... seems to work OK so far, at least WUProp, SETI will see later, but I have some questions already: 1. Is there any posibility to tell BOINC not to stop crunching when I turn on the screen, i.e. something like "Suspend work while computer is in use?" -> no. 2. According to the Android FAQ BOINC won't download any work if not on WiFi. Any possibility to remove that silly limitation? Since this device is sometimes going to be used as a internet router for longer periods of time, this would be very annoing. That would be everything for now, but I might find more annoing things later... EDIT: 3. Network access like to "normal" BOINC clients possible, so if I want to see what it is doing, than I can check from another computer? |

@Claggy: OK, thanks. I somehow could not find the preferences before, now I found them (although I'm pretty sure I tried opening them before the same way and it didn't work). :D |

Works OK so far, but how do I get this thing to build up a WU cache? There's nothing in the local settings like in the desktop version of BOINC, or at least I can't find it. I changed my online settings to 3 + additional 0.01 days, which should be OK for BOINC v7 AFAIK, but still BOINC requests a new WU just about half an hour before the old one finishes, which is of course not enough if it happens during the weekly outage for example. |

I don't think there is a setting for that. It looks at how long it's likely to be before you finish the current task and fetches another based on that. If your device has multiple cores and you aren't using all of them, you can set it to use more cores, then set it back again as soon as it downloads more work, but that's a temporary solution. For example, I used it last winter when I was going out of town and wasn't sure if wifi would be available. Otherwise, don't worry about it. In the grand scheme of things, a couple hours' idle time on a phone or tablet isn't going to make much difference in anything. I have a new HP 7 Plus and would like to change it's domain name from android_80 <blah, blah> to something more meaningful. Is this possible or even desirable? This is my first Android device so I'm just now getting my feet wet. Also, is there something equivalent to iTunes for Android? If so, how do I get hooked up? |

A few follow up thoughts ... The HP 7 Plus 1301 has a micro SD slot. Would adding external memory in this form help with the crunching? Have not gotten an answer yet to the 're-naming' question but have found a useful site for HP 7 Plus -- http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Android-Tablets-e-g-HP-Slate-7/bd-p/android. If/when I do get a renaming answer - will post it here. I can't be the only one with a 1301 - can I? |

A few follow up thoughts ... The HP 7 Plus 1301 has a micro SD slot. Would adding external memory in this form help with the crunching? Moving the app to SD is not supported. Changing the machine identity is not currently supported. However NativeBOINC supports this feature. After ~year of development of stock version NativeBOINC remains superior one. SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them. |

HAL9K + Raistmer- Thanks for the responses guys. I tried installing NATIVEBOINC first but couldn't get anywhere with it. That's probably because I'm a complete newbee to Android. Since regular BOINC is working well, I hate to mess with it. In fact it just started running a file on the 4th core. I think for now at least, I'll just leave well enough alone. Maybe after I've saved some more allowance money I'll get another tablet and stick with installing NB until I get it working :-) Thanks again ... -John |

To follow up ... I added an Ematic EGQ307 to my SETI garden yesterday. Installed Native Boinc -- it was a breeze. Not sure why I had so much trouble putting it on the HP 7Plus. I'll let the 307 do it's thing for a week and if all goes well I'll switch the HP7+ over to Native Boinc. I got the EGQ307 from Walmart (apperently on-line only - not in stores?) $60 with free shipping. Only had to pay state sales tax. Quad core 1.2 Ghz for $ 60 amazing! |

Since I got my Nexus 5 my old phone (a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2) is pretty useless so I thought I give BOINC for android a try. It runs well on the Ace 2, the phone doesn't get hot or so, but it takes very long to finish a WU: 32+ hours for 2 WUs. My question is if anybody here has compared the official BOINC with Native BOINC for android. The latter one claims to have optimizations for ARM processors so I wonder if it would be any faster? |

The Native BOINC on the EGQ307 loaded and gave all the appearances of running but the finished files never seem to have gotten back to S@H servers. After a couple of days I gave up and loaded the regular Android BOINC version and it ran fine for about 10 days but at some point new files stopped coming in. I tried a few things (settings) without success. I then uninstalled BOINC and attempted to re-install it. I received an error message saying insufficient memory. Took out some updated (& unwanted) apps that seemed to be hogging memory and got the program to re-install. All 4 cores crunching away. Also plugged in a 32 GB microSD card. Not sure if it helps or not. Both the HP7+ and the EGQ307 now sit on a 2 pound 7 oz. aluminum block with cooling fins. Rubber bands are wrapped around the tabs to enhanced the thermal flow out of the tabs into the AL blocks. The blocks are warm to the touch but not hot. Weather here near Washington DC has been uncooperative. I shut the desk tops down for electrical storms (but leave the tabs on). |

I tried Native Boinc but didn't like it much. The screen didn't turn off, no matter what settings I chose. And when I turned it off manually computation seemed to stop also. Back on offical Client now and running 2 WUs that seem to take around 100 hours to finish. I'm sure I get a whooping amount of credits for those;-) |

Noticed a name change for both Android devices while the desktops remain constant. Whats up with that? |

Is there any way to get more tasks? I always just get 2 tasks and the account settings don't work for android. |

Is there any way to get more tasks? I always just get 2 tasks and the account settings don't work for android. Go to the Projects Tab, and Click update, you might have to do this a couple of times, the caches settings are hardcoded to something like 0.25 + 0.25 (It might be as high as 0.5 + 0.5), Because of the way the Boinc 7 scheduler works, It'll ask for the amount of work for the 'Minimum' plus 'Maximum' levels, then wait for the amount of work cached to drop below the minimum level before asking again, hitting the update button will make it ask for the extra 0.25 day, you'll likely have to hit it more than once, (waiting for Seti's 5 minutes between attempts) Another way of getting more work is to attach to a couple of different projects, just suspend all but one in turn to get work from each project. Huh. That's interesting. The settings (number of cores) on both my tablets worked fine. It's a slider bar and I just set both to 4 cores. Sometimes it takes a few hours to catch up but so far it has always worked. |

Thx Claggy, the update trick worked for me! Unfortunatly there's already a new problem here: I had 2 tasks running for more then 3 days, they finished today but the validation is inconclusive. Before I got this tasks I copied the 7.28 neon application from Seti Beta to the Seti folder on my phone and renamed it to 7.21. Could this be a problem? |
