So Anwar Sadat had many of his political opponents and critics rounded up and imprisoned or executed, which made him very unpopular and he was assasinated. His replacement Mubarak had the elections sewn up because he was the only candidate.

Hosni Mubarak was overthrown for (among other things) torture and murder under his regime. His replacement Morsi had many of Mubarak's supporters imprisoned or killed.

Then Mohammed Morsi was overthrown, and his replacement el-Sisi is having many of Morsi's supporters imprisoned or killed.

Then el-Sisi was overthrown, and his replacement...
Oh sorry, i'm getting one step ahead there.

Keeps the cost of holidays there down!
That may appear a callous attitude but i'm a scientist not a politician, and this is a situation for politicians to sort out, i'll stick to designing anti-fungal drugs.
