Do side forums that have nothing to do with science much less SETI harm the project? I almost unplugged and quit because of what was posted in the political forum a few days ago, I may not post there so what else can I do. I know I don't have to look but it is there. My taxes pay for this site wile most posters pissing on US come from countries who contribute squat.

Don't let them take over it is perhaps the best approach Batter up (hello - not sure if we've chatted before :))- though possibly at times very frustrating. Coooooooooooool verbal annihilation (metaphorically speaking obviously) could rectify any harm caused.

And if I should ever offend you... TELL ME.... please :) Or... are you telling me now? :)

All the best, Anniet

Most people who run seti do not visit the forums at all. I suspect any Cafe or Politics "fall out" is negligible.

The Cafe is simply a virtual coffeehouse where friends can meet and discuss events. Personally I love the Cafe!

Please elaborate on what kind of tax you pay to keep Seti@Home running? California state tax? Or fedearal tax?
As far as I know Nasa stopped its funding of this project many years ago. Yes the space science lab gets grant money but not for seti@home. This project exists becuase of donors and the good graces of UC Berkely.

I think the fix is simple really.

If you don't like the Cafe, then don't go there (or any other section that doesn't meet your standards). ;-)

Cheers.

I note that you've only made 287 posts in the 15 years since you joined, so you aren't really in a position to huff and puff are you, despite your high RAC?

Just what does that have to do with crunching or being a member of the project?

Ah, in place of being a real person and a real scientist ready able and willing to do REAL science by answering REAL questions, we cop out and lable it what it isn't and make fun of it in place of being that real person...

Makes real sense to me...... not.

I couldn't post in politics and I don't have to tell you what just happened, over the last 7 years in the Cafe. I know I don't have to look but they are there. Well spring has sprung, soon I will be going out to play more and out of site out of mind.

Now I am confused, you were upset over something posted in politics and nearly left, but you couldn't post here??

So you create a thread complaining about the cafe because of the Kenzie saga?

What you have seen in the cafe over the last few days happens once in a blue moon, the real arguments and heated discussions are here in politics.

So are you saying the Cafe is bad but politics is good? Or all threads not connected with science or crunching are bad for SETI

We have a winner. BTW that incident lasted for 7 years so that is 2.7 blue moons.

The forums serve a greater purpose other than just SETI and it's science. Even though many arguments and disagreements have been had, even after all the fiascos that have rocked the forums, they serve to allow people to socialize in common internet fashion. Socializing is much more than just discussing a singular topic or two.

We simply have to remember that even though people say things that we don't agree with, or anger us, is just another person's opinion in a sea of opinions. Remember: no one has a right to not be offended, and that is the true value of freedom of speech.

OK that is what social media is for, get a Twitter account. How is this banter filling the data base with something that will be useful for generations to come?

I must say this is a very international group and not just US left/right radicals spouting the party line. It shows me the US left and right has a common enemy and Bush/Obama are not them. Yes I said ENEMY.

IMO we get some insight how our other members think, what interests them and so on.

As for Twitter, I'll pass as Facebook is enough for me and that's just used to keep up with close friends and family.

As for left or right, I'll stay with the line in the centre as I'm not an extremist in either way (though sometimes my humour gets mistaken for such at times).

Cheers.

If you were in NATO there would be a very real possibility your son's will have to be killing fellow posters sons. That isn't social that is fact.

Seeing as I live on an island (admittedly a very large 1) I don't have to worry about my sons getting involved and I'm very thankful for that.

Cheers.
