Hi, I just now signed up. I am curious what the requirements of the most time consuming code for seti@home is. ie- an array input + algorithm = result array?? Would it be practical to design a small PCB with FPGA/DSP as special purpose hardware to make available to SETI @ Home supporters? Maybe the GPU does it all and this is a dumb question, but I remain curious. Dan |

SETI has gone under many code changes in the last 6 years, which would obsolete such specialized hardware as soon as a new version comes out. Not really worth the time, investment, and development. GPUs are a far better option since the code can be changed in software, and the GPU is a highly specialized math engine that is well suited for the type of repetitive algorithms that most distributed computing tends to use. |
