Hi,

I'm running Ubuntu Linux 12.04.2 and BOINC only. Will this card "ATI Radeon X1650se" work in BOINC. (GPU)?

No, the Radeon X1650 is too old and does not support OpenCL or ATi's proprietary Brook API which allows crunching to happen on GPUs.

You'll need at least an NVidia 8800 or newer, or an ATi/AMD Radeon HD 38xx series or newer in order for the GPU to support the proper APIs for crunching.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer,

too bad ;( I'm searching for the right GPU/card to run BOINC along with my i7 CPU's so that I can do some serious crunching ;)

Thanks again...

Which i7 CPUs? Since all the ones showing there are Pentium 4s and one Core Duo, mind telling what kind of i7 you have? 2nd generation, 3rd, 2nd gen of 3rd?

Hi,

You know, as we talked about, I'm building new computers to replace the old because they are to slow. These are the CPU's I have got this far:

Intel Core i5 3330 - 3 GHz - 4 cores - 4 tråde - 6 MB cache - LGA1155 Socket
Intel Core i7 3770 - 3.4 GHz - 4 cores - 8 tråde - 8 MB cache - LGA1155 Socket

And I bought 1 card to test, the card we talked about, MSI GeForce GT 610 1GB PhysX CUDA with a large Heatsink, so that I can mount a fan for ekstra cooling! But I'm having some trouble getting room for all these ekstra fans and stuff.
And, I'm not sure about the drivers either. The first time I installed Ubuntu 12.04.2, BOINC didn't use the GPU. Only the CPU. But I remember you once told me not to use all CPU's (cores) if I wanted to use the GPU as well. But is this necessary? Doesn't the card work by itself? And I'm wasn't sure how to set it up either. I thought it was because of the missing or wrong Linux drivers!?!?
First when I find the right setup and configuration, I will buy the rest of the cards.. I got all the CPU's and motherboards, SSD's and RACK cases.. I just need to solve these driver/graphic card/CPU conf. issues ;)

MSI GeForce GT 610 1GB PhysX CUDA with a large Heatsink, so that I can mount a fan for ekstra cooling!

GeForce GT 610 is so weak of a GPU (rebranded GeForce GT 520 - TDP 29 watts) so even passive cooling have to be sufficient:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_600_Series#GeForce_600_.286xx.29_series

You spend money on expensive CPUs and cheap GPU - do the opposite if you want your money spend more effectively.

BOINC didn't use the GPU

You need NVIDIA drivers (which support CUDA)
Example of computer using Linux + NVIDIA for SETI:

Hi BilBg,

Sorry for the very, very very very late response.

Thanks for your reply, but I have to say that I did't do anything to save money as a matter of fact. I started a thread/post, asking for the best way and the less pricy way to build this Linux/BOINC computer, because it was my intention to build several computers alike. I was looking for a card, that would run with BOINC and be a Low Profile card with low profile brackets. This, Geforce GT610 is, and therefore this is one of the cards I'm testing. I bought several cards, to find the best, with the best cooling possibilities. E.g. Zotac GT610 is with active cooling, but it's so g.. d... small, so theres not much cooling on this card, and because it's with a fan mounted on, It's difficult to mount extra fans. These thing are what I'm trying and testing. If you have a great idea for a card, low profile due to the fact that I'm using 2Units Rack mouted Cases, I'll be grateful for your help. But, of course I'm looking at the price tag, because I'm building several Linux/BOINC Servers ;)

So, please let me hear your suggestion ;)

Again, thanks for your interest in my "project" ;)

From your earlier post:
" I'm searching for the right GPU/card to run BOINC along with my i7 CPU's so that I can do some serious crunching ;)"

... so you say nothing about need for "low profile", only desire for "serious crunching" (and GeForce GT 610 is the lowest possible variant of today NVIDIA GPUs)

***

You now have:
http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N610GT-MD1GD3H-LP.html#/?div=Specification

GeForce GT 610 Specifications:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-610/specifications

Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) 102 °C

So if you experiment with high load on that GPU (without any mod of the heatsink)
and you get 70-80 °C it is safe and you don't need mod of the heatsink

Much better choice (ASUS GeForce GT 640 Low Profile 1 GB GDDR5):

Hello BilBg,

Thanks for your reply. Really, thank you!

I looked at your suggestions, and "GT640-1GD5-L" looks really great. I can se what you mean! I will try that card as well. I'm ordering i now, so that I can test that one to. I wrote a little shell script, which controls/checks temperature on the CPU's, and I'm working on a script which can check the GPU temp as well. But that is another issue for another post.

My biggest problem is, still, that I cant get the BOINC to accept/use the GPU. This I would very much like some help with. Do you know someone who uses Linux? Once, I wrote with a super guru in here, but I haven't heard from him lately.

Look here. The new Linux Boinc Server is "Wellington":

Hello again,

Nope, no change. Will not work. I find it very funny, that I have to install desktop utilities for the Ubuntu Server 12.04 to work with MSI GeForce GT610. To make the GPU useable in BOINC.

Well, you were right about the Low Profile thing as well ;) I didn't write anything about it. Sorry for that my friend ;)

Well, I'll guess we tried ;)
Thanks for all your help, really.. Thank you..

Kind Regards,
Dan

i also find a videocard for crunching with low consumption and good efficiency, and possible - with passive cooling for put it in the 24/7 "server" in the future, and find out, there are a gt630 rev 2.0 ( with 64 bit memory channel), who have tdp around 25 watts, and about 700 GFLOPS rating!
it looks like very efficient.
one folk there report, he have gt640 and gt630, and 640 is only 25% faster ( but looks like is about 2x pricey than gt630, and also have TDP of 49 watts - also 2x).
as so i ordered one gt630, to firstly swap 9400gt ( also with 50w tdp, but only 66 GFLOPS) in my home desktop for tests...:D
i publish result and opinion later, and then maybe move that card to server and bought second for desktop...

there is excellent table with nvidia GPU's :

Hello guys,

"...he have gt640 and gt630, and 640 is only 25% faster.."

I'll ordered Asus GT640 because we found out that it endures a lot more heat that others ;) And because it has a large fan and a large fan too. The reason why I first bought 2 GT610 of each brand, was because I wanted to test one card with a large heat-sink and one card with a fan. I wasn't aware of Asus GT640 before it was to late. And GT610 freezes all the time. It starts running after reboot, but a few hours down the line, it freezes. After it has frozen, it stops working, and the estimated CPU time gets larger and larger instead of the opposite ;( It runs for a while after reboot, but after some time, a few hours maybe, it freezes ;(

OK, I didn't know that, but its logical. Showing IP numbers, path's and computer name's is of course a security risk.

Hello friends ;)

Almost solved. Wrong edition, right result!

New attempt to solve the issue "Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 64bit - BOINC using GPU - Nvidia driver/GeForce GT610"

Just finishing the clean installation of Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.4 (Desktop, not Server!) Not being able to install the file from BOINC's download site, I did this instead "apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager" which is showed on BOINC helping pages. But this does not install the newest boinc version. And now a notice tells me to download and install the new version.... etc. etc. never mind that right now.

But, after installing this desktop version, and installing boinc-client and boing-manager, and attaching to project using the manager, I checked to see if the GPU was running. Not yet, so I went on DL the newest driver from Nvidia 64bit 331.38. and making it bootable "chmod +x filename.run". Running the file gave me the same problems as when doing this on the Ubuntu Server Edition! So I went on, doing the same as I did there, almost.
I started a terminal, ctrl-alt-f2 and logged in, the claiming sudo rights "sudo su", then "stop lightdm", then running the Nvidia installer "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38.run". Some questions are asked during the installation, I answered "Yes" to [install 32bit libraries etc.], "Yes" to [reconfigure X-server or something like that] (I will make a better todo when this is all finished!!)
Rebooting the system and updating the project from Boinc Manager showed me a 5 running unit. (CPU i5-3470 has 4 cores) and this 5 unit is named: (0.01 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPU). This I also found when doing it with Ubuntu Server 12.04.4, but the GPU ran for 7 minutes and the the temp. of the GPU suddenly dropped. This meaning the crunching also stopped. But not with the Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.4, here the GPU has been running now for 47 minutes and the GPU is still 47 degrees Celsius!
Here's the log file from Boinc Manager and a screen-dump of Boinc Manager showing the GPU crunching still after more than 10 minutes.:
GPU temp.:
# nvidia-smi -a |grep Gpu
        Gpu : N/A

OK, I couldn't upload a screendump, it's not possible in this forum. The reason I would like to show you this screendump is because when 4 work units were done after about 50 minutes, the GPU had only completed about 5-6% of it's work unit.
I know this card GT610 is a "not very fast" card. We discussed this inhere. But I also learned that GPU's would be much faster doing data crunching that ordinary CPU's !! I will replace the GT610 with the faster Asus GeForce GT640 which I was told would be a much better choice. But how much better will it be?

What is the reason for doing all this work, if GPU's are so much "slower" than an ordinary Intel i5 CPU? How fast is a "fast" graphic card" compared to e.g. i5-3470?

We now know that the hardware in this test works, and we know that it runs on Ubuntu Desktop 12,04.4. OK, then why will it not run on Ubuntu Server 12.04.4? The only difference is the graphical environment, X-server! According to Ubuntu, there's not the difference of the Desktop Edition and the Server Edition as earlier on, e.g. Ubuntu Server 10.04 v. Ubuntu Desktop 10.04!
So why is this? Why will the GPU not work properly?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated at this thread:

GPU temp.:

You did a test only with Asteroids@home CUDA application - which is slow as you can see by this table:
http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=233&postid=2228#2228

The table is for the first version of the app, now they claim "about 20%" improvement in the current version (which you use now):

Try the SETI@home CUDA (Lunatics_x41g_linux64_cuda32.7z) to see the CPU vs GPU difference:
