Here is a link, but it says I need a plugin I don't have on Firefox/Linux to watch the launch video. Yet I see NASA and JPL videos OK.

Indeed they did. I wish them luck.

India has successfully launched a spacecraft to Mars - with the aim of becoming the fourth space agency to reach the planet.

Nothing much to be gained by flying to Mars so I wonder if this is a form of
calibration exercise by the Indian Space Agency. It's a good move by them and I
hope they try exploring lesser tapped regions of our space rather than those
already ventured.

AFP - India spacecraft probe leaves Earth orbit on mission to Mars

India's first mission to Mars left Earth's orbit Sunday, successfully entering the second phase of its journey that could see New Delhi win Asia's race to the Red Planet, scientists said.

The spacecraft, called Mangalyaan, now embarks on a 10-month journey around the sun before reaching Mars in September next year.

It should be (hopefully) sterilized junk until we set foot on it. Then again it could pick something up (that is not from us) and drag it in. (^;

If there is anything to be contaminated on Mars, and most likely there is, it is probably too late to worry about it. So now if anything living is found on Mars and it has DNA, there will be arguments for decades that said life came from earth riding in one of our landers.
