Currently has amd duron morgan 1ghz..at 5X200
Would like to install amd 35w. 2400xp-m
Sence I can't change mb settings it would be under clocked, my cpu speed would be the same, but my L2 would go from 64k to 512k.
both are socket A
would under clocking run cooler?
Right now It's a pretty slow cruncher.

As its not always possible to overclock it's also not always possible to underclock.
Electronics is about timing, and everything in your computer has to run as a peleton of soldiers in passes. Changing the steps to akward amounts doesnot favore speed. To really gain speed you have to match things against one another and a laptop is far from ideal to do that. It has to less space to comfortably experiment and tamper with things, furthermore I guess most dont have the special tools to do it...

It is really not like backing a cake in wich you can substitute some ingredients with others...
Finetuning a PC is a very well paid specialist business, surely if you want to race.

Greetings from Belgium ;-))

Generally this will ONLY work if the manufacturer already sells this kind of setup in your model of machine.

Unless the chipset supports both CPUs, it's not possible.
Even then, many laptop CPUs can't be upgraded- the CPU is soldered directly to the motherboard, there is no socket.

If your CPU is socketed, I'd go for it.
Check with the manufacturer if you bios supports the new CPU.

Getting more L2 cache is far more effective than increasing clock speed.

Well I found BIOS that will support new cpu , flashed and is working same as old, so ordered new cpu , and should receive in a few days. Will report on + or - soon. ordered mobile 2200xp barton $77 if it works it will be big step. from 1gig with 64k L2 to 1.66gig with 512k L2. Got my fingers crossed. If this works..watch out Timmy.. you'll need a nose mask to avoid the dust!!
