At first I thought these might be some sort of wasp,
but it turns out they're sawflies. I had a bunch of
them in my backyard at the beginning of summer.

They almost look like black bumble bees, it's a wonder they can fly...

Suzie, I don't remember ever seeing them here in Central Valley California. What state do you hail from?
Pluto will always be a planet to me.

I can answer that. She lives deep in the hot of Texas.

So far, so good, the last moth I found was one that got away earlier, so I've seen nothing since then, on Wednesday at 8pm or 9pm I should know for sure. Cause they usually have been appearing from 6-10pm.

Can we please stop with the spiders... Anything else, I can handle; however, NOT spiders!!! Please!!!???

Hey now. This is the bug place, and that includes spiders.
Let's not relegate the bugs to a special thread and then
re-relegate spiders into another special thread. We'll end
up with threads for every species of insect and arachnid.

Too bad we don't have the option of looking at a subject
line and then choosing to open or not.

Technically, Spiders are NOT bugs... Only insects qualify as being true bugs... Spiders are NOT insects... Therefore, by the title of this thread, THEY DO NOT BELONG HERE!!!

Just sayin'...

Sorry, Scott, but in my mind bug is broader than insect. The dictionary may not agree with me, but as thread founder that's my ruling.

That said, I don't like spiders either.

I wasn't going by any dictionary; I was going by what I was taught in Jr. High and High School in Science and Biology classes.

Yes, you are the Founder of the Thread and can say what is and is not allowed; however, I stand by the FACT that Spiders are NOT bugs. :-)

With the main difference besides the classification, being the number of legs I think, 6 vs 8.

'One upon a dark and stormy summer's night'
(He he.) while working at a
remote met' observing site on a Canadian
air base, I sprayed some bug killer to stop
some little black beetles from cluttering
up my observation sheet. I was happy with
my quick fix for the little bugs. Then I
left for home thirty minutes later having
turned the site over to the next shift
worker, a young French Canadian girl. Alas
the following day I was to find out that she
suffered from Arachnophobia as in her words:
"A million creepy crowley huge bugs,
(She meant spiders.) were falling from the
ceiling!" Needless to say I denied any evil
intent on my part, and tried to poo poo the
whole affair. That week I earned her complete
forgiveness with a whole hearted apology and
a nice dinner at one of the finer greasy
spoons in one of the nearest sizeable towns
in the area. It was a lesson for me in
diplomacy plus she was a very nice person,
and if I had at that time any kind forethought
I would not have done what I did. To this
day I still feel guilt over that incident.

I honestly don't understand why spiders are so scary to
intelligent adults. After all, they are more afraid of
us than we are of them, and they eat the other bugs that
frighten a lot of us.

Granted, I wouldn't want one laying eggs in my hair, but
that doesn't really happen.

Vic, If its not an infestation then why are you making the inside of your house air tight?

If your just seeing a few then why the massive caulk and tape job?

An infestation to Me says the moths have laid eggs, as ehow.com says, I've never given the moths the time to do that, I've had moths mate in My presence twice, but no eggs were ever laid as I killed them promptly while they were vulnerable, I'm preventing an infestation and at the same time making My place weather tight. The source is external, as this was an invasion, so I've sealed them out. I have no clothes moths in the house now at all, their attracted to conditions that swamp coolers can make from what I've read, as the larvae need cool moist air, since I have no other way to cool this place at present, this is all that I could do and I have succeeded, I'm confident that I've won. There were 8 one day, then 7 on another, 6 on another day, the numbers went up and down for nearly a month, so I had reasons, I don't think insects belong inside a house and these are destructive.

Vic you do know that moths sart as larvae and grow up to be moths dont you. And if the moths can still get in between the walls from the outside and lay eggs your going to still be seeing moths.
