http://www.theage.com.au/technology/sci-tech/breakthrough-in-storing-700-terabytes-of-data-in-1-gram-of-dna-20130124-2d89q.html

I was reading this and I have spent the last two weeks going over possible ideas to do with this.

So first of all say in the future we give usb harddrives away and then start putting all our data..in ourselves, in the DNA of ourselves or maybe in a bacteria that lives in only us.

That is all our information drivers licence etc is all encoded in us..and only us. Not only that so is your family photos and your life story.

Say you go a step further say you make a video about yourself..Hi my name is Tim i live in 2013 etc etc. and you put that in your DNA encoded and leave it there.

Then the next generation reads the DNA from there grandfather and grandmother in your DNA. Say this goes further say 10 generations later there are whole families with the history of a people in encoded in your DNA.

Ok..why is this in the SETI@home science section.

Well say the human race as we know it nearly dies out but a couple of mutants live on and evolve into something else millions of years in the future.. Maybe we mutate into a hamster like creature.

In the hamster is our story, encoded in its DNA. Or maybe aliens could just use bacteria as data storage devices.. maybe we should look into if we can find actual encoded data in DNA.

If there are messages encoded on our DNA then we could probably rule out that life on earth started here and nobody is ready to face that possibility quite yet.

We are always looking out, but I found it a novel idea to look inwards to DNA.

Not my field, Chris, but I believe you should look into Gene Splicing in the light of your statement.

Hi,
I can not code anything to my DNA, but somebody has managed to do so..

I don't know if it was his/hers DNA but DNA anyway.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/09/alien-code-in-human-genes_n_3034876.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news

The scientists are suggesting that an advanced alien civilization "seeded" our galaxy eons ago with an ET signal that eventually found its way to Earth, implanting a genetic code into humans, reports Discovery.com.

Yeah... but we will need also Klingon's, Vulcan's and Romulan's DNA to decode the full message... and then we will see and holographic video from the "elders" explaining that they "seeded" several planets around the galaxy and leave the message split across the species to give us the option to work in something togheter and in peace... oh.. and that's why we all have "humanoid" bodies (even in Pandora, where all the other species, except the N'avi, have 6 extremities)... :b

Anyway, I think that leaving a kind of mark or brand in an engineered DNA it's just of matter of knowledge and technology... We may still not be able to do that but I dont think it's impossible...
Of course, even if it's possible, it doesn't means that there IS a mark in our DNA.

The Huffington Post's source for this story was Discovery.com, and their source was the peer-reviewed scientific journal Icarus. Icarus published the work of Dr. Vladimir shCherbak, a mathematician, and Maxim Makukov. an astrobiologist, both of whom apparently have legitimate academic standing.
I don't presume to pass judgement on their conclusions about artificially introduced order in our genetic code, especially the mathematics involved, but these men appear to have earned the right to have their findings seriously considered in a scientific setting.

Ya know, my alter ego,Daddio, is a man of impeccable academic credentials and has considered this very topic at great length.

It may be possible to modify DNA like the above, but in light of mutations, who's to say that it will remain accurate?

NOT a giggle.
The evidence is mounting.

There is CAT DNA in there too...LOL.

There has indeed been a certain symbiotic (co)evolution between cats (and dogs) and humans.

Data can be encoded in DNA. Some folks did it just for grins. It kinda' blew my mind.

Here is the link:

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2013/01/23/shakespeare-thou-art-stored-in-dna/?hpt=hp_c2

In summary here is what they tested storing and recovering. Quoting from the article:

"Researchers used five different kinds of digital information to show that their method would work to preserve a variety of media in DNA. These included a text file with William Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets, a PDF of a scientific paper, a photo in JPEG format of the European Bioinformatics Institute, and an MP3 audio excerpt of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Scientists showed that they could encode these files in DNA and then, by sequencing the DNA, reconstruct them with 100% accuracy."

Bill, that's what started me thinking about DNA as having coding in it.

Looks like I am not alone.

I was looking at it more like there could be a chance something could be there kinda thing not as a 'seeding event'.

If you think of it like an odds game, we have already done this:used coding to put information on DNA.

Then if a more advanced civilization existed before us, chance is they could of completed a similar project.

Say a super nova event wiped out half a star system and sent parts of that DNA hurtling into our solar system billions of years ago.

Then we retain small fragments of grandpa Alteron's 60th birthday message.

btw, i don't think this is scary..coding to the DNA. its just another form of coding... SETI GEEKS BEHOLD.. BACTERIA HARDRIVES!!!
