I've built a native port to Mac OS X 10.3 of KBoincSpy using KDE/Mac (also known as KDE on Darwin, http://kde.opendarwin.org). The good news: it doesn't run under X11, but rather as a native Carbon application (although, in my experience, you will need X11 installed - KDE looks for a little program called iceauth which is included in the Apple X11 Server files). The bad news: KDE/Mac is currently in pre-alpha. There are a lot of GUI bugs and glitches. Use at your own risk. The even worse news: this is the first time I package anything for Mac, so I'm not sure I did everything right. I've tested the package on my machine, and it seemed to work. The even worser news: I don't own a Mac, and I built everything using PearPC. I cannot predict how this would work on a real Mac. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is: 1. to install all 'required' packages from http://kde.opendarwin.org and possibly the 'recommended' packages as well 2. to configure KDE, as explained in the KDE on Darwin wiki, and make sure that it works (try running konqueror, for example). Consult the FAQ on the same wiki for troubleshooting. 3. to install and run KBoincSpy from: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/kboincspy/kboincspy-0.8.0-1.macosx103+kde20040308.dmg?download (IMPORTANT: make sure you installed and configured KDE in steps 1 and 2 before doing this. KBoincSpy WILL NOT RUN WITHOUT KDE). About ten days of work went into building this package, and I made this effort believing that the Mac community would benefit from it. It's perfectly understandable if you're frightened by this whole 'experimental', 'pre-alpha', 'run-at-your-risk' thing, and choose not to try this port of KBoincSpy. On the other hand if I don't get enough users, I'm not going to port any future version, ever. Plus, you might miss on something good. - Roberto PS. Nice Screens...wish I could try it, but I'm running on the work computer and I don't quite dare to install something in Alpha or Beta, just in case. V.0 I can get away with, usually... Have you checked with Activity Monitor to see what percent of your CPU cycles it uses to update the GUI? C Join Team MacNN |

> Have you checked with Activity Monitor to see what percent of your CPU cycles > it uses to update the GUI? I haven't, but I'm positive it won't take a lot of CPU cycles. This because (1) it doesn't take a lot of CPU on X11 (on i386), and (2) this is PearPC we're talking about: if there's a program that uses a lot a CPU I immediately know about it because it makes the entire emulated session unusable. The fact that I was able to take that screenshot is itself proof that's light on CPU usage :-). - Roberto |

YES! Count me in! The only problems I've had with KDE/X is the init app/wrapper - That seems to hang and cause lots of trouble later on (especially with KGeo and KControl). Aside from the (absolutely irritating) reliance on the control key instead of command, I'm OK with being a guinea pig. I'll let you know how it goes. :-) |

This is a correction: The "wrapper" app is kded. |

<p>NOTE: This is a very long post with a wide preformatted field. You will have to use Unicode to read this post. Please select UTF-8 from your browser’s “Text Encodings” or “Character Set” submenu. Sorry for the inconvenience.</p> <p>OK. It’s taken me about two hours and change to download the KDE suite and install it, and about an hour or so in setting up BOINC, so I apologize for the delay. It looks like my system is still too shaky, but I'll keep it running until I wake up. That should be enough time for KBoincSpy to sink in.</p> <p>It still looks like kded hasn’t been dealt with — KGeo, KControl, and a few other KDE apps still cause ugly somnambulism. So whatever KBoincSpy relies on, it’s gonna be a kinda shaky foundation. Have you considered doing a port to Fink before going the KDE on Darwin route?</p><p>Anyway, I’ve obviously got problems on my end with BOINC (I couldn't start it because “another instance is running” which is total bs). I logged in as root and all seems to be working well enough. Here’s the first few bugs I’ve found. Serious ones are white-on-black, niceties are black-on-white.</p> <p>❶ Double-clicking localhost▸Processor in tree mode does not bring up the Processor pane.</p><p>❷ Double-clicking localhost in tree mode does not reveal SETI@home, CPU1, Cache, Client, nor Processor. How about using the column view instead? Or would that be too much of a break with KDE's UI?</p><p>❸ Tabs are not clearly labeled for closing, mostly because the ⊗ doesn't repaint fast enough. Keep in mind that most Mac users never see an icon on a tab (Except for the Finder, but that's the exception to prove a rule, I guess). To close a tab requires two slow clicks (then again I double click in ≤0.1s).</p><p>④ More than four panes causes the browser pane to be squished. I don't know if that's expected, but it's an annoyance. Is it possible to have one pane open at a time?</p><p>⑤ Links open up with Konqueror. OK, so this really isn’t a bug, but I think that you should consider polling Mac OS for the preferred browser if possible. Not a biggie.</p><p>❻ The WindowShade button (on the right of the title bar) is useless - Nix it. The same goes for the Messages window.</p><p>❼ Clicking in the Messages window does not highlight the row.</p><p>❽ The sort order triangle (▼ v. ▲) in the column labels weren’t visible unless you were actively clicking it. I put it in past tense because I wasn’t able to duplicate it. The selected column does highlight though.</p><p>⑨ The Calibration Pane is hard to read, especially the table.</p><p>⑩ The Sky Map is good, but it would be nice to see KStars handling it.</p><p>⑪ The Configure KBoincSpy pane has a System Tray field. It’s useless under KDE on Darwin, so nix it.</p><p>⑫ Do the menu items’ keyboard equivalents have to include control? It feels very stupid to use ⌘⌃C when the HIG specifies ⌘C for copy, or ⌘⌃O instead of ⌘O.</p> <p>So what does work? Practically everything else! Resizing, reordering the column headings, making settings, quitting and starting up… I’ve even noticed that the contextual menu is almost always available for copying — And the clipboard works very well, too! The “epicenter” animation in the Map is really neat! ☺</p> <p>All in all, KBoincSpy has been the best behaved KDE on Darwin app I’ve used thus far. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em! It hasn’t crashed, somnambulated, hung, or submarined. In fact, here’s a top -w -s 5 -o pid output:</p> Processes: 66 total, 3 running, 63 sleeping... 139 threads 05:01:58 Load Avg: 1.43, 1.31, 1.18 CPU usage: 89.2% user, 10.8% sys, 0.0% idle SharedLibs: num = 120, resident = 49.1M code, 3.50M data, 17.1M LinkEdit MemRegions: num = 9290, resident = 111M + 14.3M private, 221M shared PhysMem: 91.2M wired, 282M active, 314M inactive, 688M used, 80.0M free VM: 6.26G + 82.6M 64784(1) pageins, 343(0) pageouts PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #PRTS(delta) #MREGS VPRVT RPRVT(delta) RSHRD(delta) RSIZE(delta) VSIZE(delta) 835 TextEdit 0.0% 0:11.58 1 66 239 22.6M 4.60M 33.5M 13.5M 165M 830 top 2.3% 1:03.72 1 17 26 26.3M 992K 492K 1.33M 27.1M 828 bash 0.0% 0:00.03 1 12 18 9.21M 92K 984K 776K 18.2M 827 login 0.0% 0:00.02 1 13 37 26.4M 140K 484K 488K 26.9M 826 BBEdit 4.8% 0:04.18 3 102 240 32.9M 5.92M( 12K) 36.4M 16.8M( 16K) 143M 825 kio_uiserv 0.0% 0:01.07 1 51 178 26.9M 1.80M 70.8M 14.3M 254M 823 kboincspy 0.3% 1:12.09 1 68 371 35.9M 12.3M 93.6M 32.9M 328M 822 sh 0.0% 0:00.02 1 11 15 17.2M 88K 860K 600K 18.2M 821 kdeinit 0.0% 0:00.60 1 21 112 9.25M 1.04M 55.4M 8.58M 202M 812 setiathome 72.8% 45:46.06 1 11 40 40.9M 13.6M(-132K) 1.40M 13.5M(-132K) 42.2M(-132K) 811 boinc_4.13 0.0% 0:01.74 1 13 28 9.66M 208K 1.33M 936K 24.2M 809 Mail 0.0% 0:11.09 4 107 223 34.6M 6.27M 28.9M 20.4M 156M 805 bash 0.0% 0:00.03 1 12 18 9.21M 120K 984K 776K 18.2M 804 login 0.0% 0:00.04 1 13 37 26.4M 144K 484K 500K 26.9M 803 Terminal 0.7% 0:15.25 4 69 236 28.5M 2.90M 36.4M 16.0M( 36K) 135M 797 CharPalett 0.0% 0:12.63 2 86 389 30.6M 6.46M 23.8M 12.2M 206M 794 AppleSpell 0.0% 0:01.78 1 26 37 26.6M 688K 2.14M 2.16M 36.3M 793 SecurityAg 0.0% 0:00.84 2 75 134 26.9M 1.72M 15.7M 4.98M 110M 792 Safari 0.0% 1:58.80 6 118 310 34.4M 8.11M 38.5M 19.5M 170M 791 kdeinit 12.5% 0:42.73 1 50( -1) 257 18.4M 2.25M 83.1M 12.4M 276M 778 kded 0.1% 0:42.77 1 51 208 26.8M 1.59M 72.1M 9.37M 260M 774 dcopserver 0.0% 0:00.13 1 18 45 26.4M 368K 11.9M 3.15M 71.4M 771 kdeinit 0.0% 0:00.04 1 9 71 284K 148K 53.0M 796K 167M 766 iCalAlarmS 0.0% 0:00.25 1 60 102 26.5M 672K 6.30M 10.9M 97.6M 759 Finder 0.0% 0:12.13 1 95 215 29.2M 4.65M 38.2M 14.1M 142M 758 SystemUISe 0.3% 0:18.78 1 181 245 32.5M 2.50M 29.8M 7.37M 132M 756 Dock 0.5% 0:02.39 3 98( 4) 166 27.5M 940K( 20K) 14.3M(1.30M) 4.50M( 824K) 99.9M(1.85M) 754 pbs 0.0% 0:00.22 2 32 41 26.6M 596K 2.28M 1.85M 44.5M 748 WindowServ 4.4% 2:26.70 3 320( 11) 623 33.0M 7.14M(1.31M) 74.2M(1.30M) 79.5M(2.58M) 195M(2.65M) 746 loginwindo 0.0% 0:00.88 5 191 201 28.3M 1.93M 17.8M 5.68M 114M 731 artsd 0.0% 0:05.90 1 12 85 26.4M 604K 6.64M 4.82M 57.1M 730 kdeinit 0.0% 0:00.26 1 38 223 15.6M 5.09M 69.0M 14.6M 263M 729 kdeinit 0.0% 0:00.09 1 9 136 16.4M 224K 59.8M 9.43M 203M 727 kdeinit 0.0% 0:00.57 1 9 78 8.82M 864K 53.9M 10.5M 168M 718 kdeinit 0.0% 0:00.66 1 21 110 17.0M 1.02M 55.4M 12.9M 202M 716 dcopserver 0.0% 0:00.08 1 18 45 26.4M 352K 11.9M 6.92M 71.4M 712 kdeinit 0.0% 0:00.03 1 9 70 240K 108K 53.0M 1008K 167M 335 ATSServer 0.0% 0:10.89 2 77 491 27.9M 1.61M 21.9M 11.1M 146M 308 automount 0.0% 0:00.02 2 29 28 27.3M 240K 972K 932K 28.3M 297 automount 0.0% 0:00.76 3 49 39 27.9M 348K 1.05M 1.19M 29.1M 295 cupsd 0.0% 0:00.73 1 11 29 19.4M 440K 1.09M 980K 28.3M 291 ntpd 0.0% 0:00.61 1 10 19 17.3M 136K 600K 340K 17.9M 287 rpc.lockd 0.0% 0:00.00 1 9 17 9.26M 76K 460K 140K 17.7M 278 nfsiod 0.0% 0:00.00 5 29 24 11.2M 92K 404K 156K 19.6M 239 lookupd 0.0% 0:35.77 2 35 65 27.4M 444K 1.05M 1.18M 28.5M 226 crashrepor 0.0% 0:00.01 1 34 20 18.8M 80K 408K 184K 27.2M 208 DirectoryS 0.0% 0:00.89 2 71 111 27.5M 708K 3.09M 1.29M 31.5M 187 ioupsd 0.0% 0:00.03 1 19 20 26.3M 108K 408K 380K 26.7M 178 SecuritySe 0.0% 0:00.44 1 77 29 27.0M 480K 1.27M 1.22M 28.2M 159 distnoted 0.0% 0:00.75 1 42 21 26.3M 244K 820K 708K 27.1M 158 KernelEven 0.0% 0:00.00 1 10 19 18.3M 96K 424K 132K 26.7M 152 mDNSRespon 0.0% 0:00.05 2 41 33 26.4M 300K 936K 840K 27.3M 144 cron 0.0% 0:00.01 1 10 23 10.2M 68K 464K 160K 27.0M 130 coreservic 0.0% 0:03.83 1 101 130 19.2M 1.48M 9.75M 6.62M 38.8M 129 SystemStar 0.0% 0:00.19 1 19 30 18.4M 224K 872K 704K 27.3M 126 dynamic_pa 0.0% 0:00.00 1 12 18 9.27M 88K 412K 124K 17.7M 122 update 0.0% 0:02.50 1 9 15 9.22M 48K 404K 120K 17.6M 120 netinfod 0.0% 0:12.23 1 10 30 26.5M 196K 528K 372K 27.0M 95 notifyd 0.0% 0:06.13 2 60 26 17.8M 164K 432K 264K 18.2M 90 diskarbitr 0.0% 0:01.05 1 94 28 18.3M 432K 940K 1.04M 27.2M 89 configd 0.0% 0:00.81 3 135 171 18.7M 612K 1.75M 2.08M 29.3M 87 kextd 0.0% 0:03.47 2 17 23 27.8M 1.55M 848K 1.72M 28.7M 81 syslogd 0.0% 0:01.50 1 10 17 17.2M 108K 428K 212K 17.7M 2 mach_init 0.0% 0:00.49 2 201 18 9.73M 144K 436K 236K 18.2M 1 init 0.0% 0:00.04 1 12 16 9.22M 108K 420K 296K 17.6M 0 kernel_tas 0.3% 0:53.91 34 2 2171 19.7M 16.8M 0K 72.5M( 48K) 737M( -4K)<p>And here’s what ps ax had to say:</p> PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 1 ?? Thanks for the very detailed report! Practically all of the bugs are KDE on Darwin bugs, about which I cannot do much other than try to work around them :-/. > kinda shaky foundation. Have you considered doing a port to Fink before going the KDE on Darwin route? That's actually how it started. Originally, it was my intention to do a Fink port and just stop there. Fink stable is hopelessly stuck at KDE 3.1.x, and there are too many things that break without at least 3.2. So my original intention was to upgrade to unstable, that has the latest KDE (3.3.1). Upgrading to unstable, it started compiling a lot of stuff from source (even tar!!! That freaked me out!). This being PearPC, compiling Qt, aRts and KDE from source would put my machine out of commission for at least 2-3 weeks. KDE on Darwin was there, precompiled and nicely packaged, so the choice was obvious. According to Benjamin Reed's blog, he has started working on it again (KDE on Darwin has been on ice since April of this year), and that too weighted in favor of it. > Double-clicking localhost?Processor in tree mode does not bring up the Processor pane. > Double-clicking localhost in tree mode does not reveal SETI@home, CPU1, Cache, Client, nor Processor. If tree mode doesn't work properly, then I'm going to remove it. Doing this port, my general policy is: 1. If I have to add a lot of code, it must be for something that works on both native Mac and X11. Adding just a few lines of code on the Mac, on the other hand, is OK. 2. If something doesn't work on Mac, and fixing it requires too effort, I'd rather remove it. In the case of tree mode, it's easier removing it: KBoincSpy defaults to icon mode, so if I remove the menu entry that selects tree mode (it's just a single line modification), nobody is ever going to know it's there. > Tabs are not clearly labeled for closing, mostly because the ? doesn't repaint fast enough. In future versions, there's going to be the choice between single panel view and tabbed panels. As above, since tabs don't work very well on Mac, I'll disabled tabbed view on Mac. > More than four panes causes the browser pane to be squished. On X11, left/right arrows appear so you can scroll tabs, so it's not an issue there. Unfortunately, it's an issue on Mac OS X. > Links open up with Konqueror They open with whatever browser KDE says it's the default browser. It should be just a matter of going to Konqueror's preferences dialog, select File associations, type .html, add a different browser, and set it as default. This creates a desktop entry. As soon as I figure out what's the right desktop entry to launch Safari, I'll include in the package, so that a user doesnt' have to go and change file associations. > The WindowShade button (on the right of the title bar) is useless - Nix it. > The same goes for the Messages window. If it's accessible from Qt, I will. > The sort order triangle in the column labels weren?t visible unless you were actively clicking it. One of the many GUI glitches of KDE/Mac. An amusing one I've noticed is the icon of the main window changing randomly from time to time. > The Calibration Pane is hard to read, especially the table. I'll try to re-design it in the next version. The problem is that it has to show a lot of stuff in a very limited space. > The Sky Map is good, but it would be nice to see KStars Integration with KStars is in my list too. The problem is that there are too many other things in that list too :-). > The Configure KBoincSpy pane has a System Tray field. It should be disabled. Check that it is. Removing it altogether is too much effort. > Do the menu items? keyboard equivalents have to include control? I don't set the keyboard equivalents, KDE does. Another KDE/Mac (but this one might actually be Qt/Mac) quirk. > All in all, KBoincSpy has been the best behaved KDE on Darwin app > I?ve used thus far. Smoke ?em if you got ?em! Thanks :-). > It hasn?t crashed, somnambulated, hung, or submarined. ... yet :-). I hope it will be still running when you wake up. Thanks again for the extremely thorough bug report. I'll try to come up with a new version addressing some of these issues withing a couple of weeks. Hopefully by that time there will be a new KDE/Mac release as well, fixing some of the UI bugs. - Roberto |

That's actually how it started. Originally, it was my intention to do a Fink port and just stop there. Fink stable is hopelessly stuck at KDE 3.1.x, and there are too many things that break without at least 3.2. That's why I still have Yellow Dog installed on /dev/rdisk0s11. apt-getting has been a pain, but it's more stable and complete than KDE on Darwin or Finked X11. Doing this port, my general policy is: Absolutely right. I know there's a Unix-to-Mac porting guide that Apple put out (where did I put it?), but doing a Carbon or Cocoa port is not going to be worth the effort - I see from the user host lists that there are very few ppcs actively crunching using BOINC. In the case of tree mode, it's easier removing it: KBoincSpy defaults to icon mode, so if I remove the menu entry that selects tree mode (it's just a single line modification), nobody is ever going to know it's there. Problem solved. :) >>Tabs are not clearly labeled for closing, mostly because the ⊗ doesn't repaint fast enough. >In future versions, there's going to be the choice between single panel view and tabbed panels. As above, since tabs don't work very well on Mac, I'll disabled tabbed view on Mac. I had assumed that it would be one pane at a time. On X11, left/right arrows appear so you can scroll tabs, so it's not an issue there. Unfortunately, it's an issue on Mac OS X. I had forgotten that the KDE UI does that - It explains a lot! They open with whatever browser KDE says it's the default browser. Just fixed it to open up Safari. It appears that even though KControl crashes and submarines majestically, the File Associations app runs fine. The only "oops" involved is that KDE will start up a new instance of Safari instead of reusing an existing one. Oops. But not a problem to worry about. >>The sort order triangle in the column labels weren't visible unless you were actively clicking it. >One of the many GUI glitches of KDE/Mac. An amusing one I've noticed is the icon of the main window changing randomly from time to time. I was getting the US I18N flag, then Konsole's icon, then an open folder icon... It's like playing the lotto (but without the big money payout). >>The Configure KBoincSpy pane has a System Tray field. >It should be disabled. Check that it is. Removing it altogether is too much effort. You're right - I didn't notice it. >>Do the menu items? keyboard equivalents have to include control? >I don't set the keyboard equivalents, KDE does. Another KDE/Mac (but this one might actually be Qt/Mac) quirk. Phooey. Oh well. >>It hasn't crashed, somnambulated, hung, or submarined. >... yet :-). I hope it will be still running when you wake up. Actually, it was BOINC what crashed last night, but KBoincSpy was still running. Once I finish off a few work units and find out how to specify where BOINC should store its files, I'm going to drop back to X.2.3 and check from there. Anyway, one last bug I've found (You don't get off that easily!). The columns in the Messages window do not remember the column order nor its sort order when KBoincSpy is relaunched. Oh, and I've had that sort order issue (▼ v. ▲) again, only this time the selected column does not highlight. To top that off, other apps have similar problems... There's a Troll hiding inside this Technology, so consider youself off the hook. It's most likely a KDE UI problem. |

> The columns in the Messages window do not remember the column order nor its sort order when KBoincSpy is relaunched. I'll take the blame for this one :-). Saving the column and sort order is something I forgot to implement in this version. - Roberto |

Well, I've had KBoincSpy up for ages now... at least 12 hrs. without a hitch. During that time artsd had bombed out. Still looking good! |

You had to say "yet" in 49916, didn't you? Well, it's been 24hrs, and I finally got KBoincSpy to crash by detatching from the SETI@home project from the Terminal. The Apple Crash Report is above. I'd give you KDE's crash report, but that crashed ages ago... I'm still half-asleep right now so I'll come back to the post to explain once I'm awake... |

@Bruno: Thanks! > Clear skies from Italy! Hmmm. Are you sure about that? :-) Here in Milan has been raining the last couple of days. @NeoAmsterdam: I knew it! It was too good to be true. :-) I've looked at the code, and I'm not sure it's my fault. I added some more checks, just in case. - Roberto PS. At least it crashed long after the KDE Crash Report application crashed! I consider that almost a triumph. |

I've looked at the code, and I'm not sure it's my fault. I've got to agree with that! At least it crashed long after the KDE Crash Report application crashed! I consider that almost a triumph. Let's put it this way, have you ever been able to keep KControl, KGeo, or artsd open and running for more than 3 sec.? KBoincSpy was up for 24 hrs - Break out the champagne! :-D |
