Has any one out there noticed that most of boinc and seti ( as well as other distributed computing projects ) users are pretty intellegent. I mean most of them are nerds ( no offence ment ), computer techs, scientists, or some sort of teacher. Yes, some boinc and seti users are like me ( just doing this for there own reason ) and are just some what normal working people, but if all of the users of boinc and seti were to have a conferance to swap info and ideas who knows what could be done. what do you think? |

What would be awesome would be to arrange get togethers around world for boinc users to meet, hook their computers together into a giant cluster to form a temporary super computer to do some serious crunching. Think how fast a climate prediction WU could get done with a hundred PC's all crunching on it! Take a look at http://www.flashmobcomputing.org/ Metal Detecting |

I was thinking more along the lines of user-group meetings - the kind of community that Linux tends to have. I think that getting together to crunch a WU in unison would be neat! |

How would one go about setting up a users group meeting? What kind of agenda would the meeting have? etc. Maybe we can work on this idea here and now. |

How about latching onto an existing UG? SETI*SIG? BOINC*SIG? |

I didn't realize there were existing user groups. However, I think the original auther was talking about having meetings in person. (Or at least, this idea came up early in the thread.) > How about latching onto an existing UG? SETI*SIG? BOINC*SIG? > |

I think over the web would be more practical kind of like starting up an instant message board for all of the users of seti, boinc, ect. You know, kind of like the message boards but faster to brain storm ideas and topics where all of us could listen in and add are ideas or solve problems. you know if you compare the number of users to to city populations we are a good sized city, but if you counted each computer contributing to that number that city would be far bigger. we are a community and the best way to improve a community is communication. the Flash Mob idea belowe is a great one but why meat some where to do that. just get particepants to do the same thing at the same time. Think, get all seti users to let there computers crunch data for one day and see just how big and strong this distibuted computing super computer really is. What do you think? |

Ok.. well I guess I misunderstood then. :( My appologies.. You did bring up some very interesting points about us being a community. At least I feel like I am somewhat a part of this community. > Well, I didn't mean in person. Dragonsaron, I also first thought of having in person meatings of seti and boinc users. you know kind of a distributed computing party, but when distributed computing participators are all over the globe that idea became very dificult, but the web we all have to have to participate so why not use it to brain storm ideas and other things in a more community type instant messaging board and I'm sorry if I sounded offencive in my last reply it wasn't ment that way and what I said wasn't pointed at just you Jim but all of the readers and input givers who have read my idea and i hope to hear more ideas, opinions, and questions from any one who reads this. agian Jim I am sorry, but you didn't misunderstand my idea, just how to go about doing some thing like that practically. Thank you for your input. > Ok.. well I guess I misunderstood then. :( My appologies.. > > You did bring up some very interesting points about us being a community. Dragonsaron, No problems. I did not take your words offensively, so no need to appologize. :) So now... to the subject at hand... I think you have a really good idea. I know there has been a couple of IRC channels set up, but I don't use IRC so I don't know how well it works. I think you have a very good idea. I think it would be very beneficial (or at least entertaining) to get together in this way. I'm not sure if I know the best route for this idea right now, but I will definitely think about it today while I'm at work. As far as the "in person" meetings go, I was thinking that maybe instead of trying to have one great big meeting for everyone, maybe have several smaller "local" meetings that people would be more inclined to attend. This might be an idea for a different time or a different thread; however. Just an idea to keep on the back burner for right now. > Dragonsaron, > I also first thought of having in person meatings of seti and boinc users. > you know kind of a distributed computing party, but when distributed computing > participators are all over the globe that idea became very dificult, but the > web we all have to have to participate so why not use it to brain storm ideas > and other things in a more community type instant messaging board and I'm > sorry if I sounded offencive in my last reply it wasn't ment that way and what > I said wasn't pointed at just you Jim but all of the readers and input givers > who have read my idea and i hope to hear more ideas, opinions, and questions > from any one who reads this. agian Jim I am sorry, but you didn't > misunderstand my idea, just how to go about doing some thing like that > practically. This would be a good program to use to have voice chat. http://www.ventrilo.com or http://www.goteamspeak.com/news.php It would let use talk to each other over our computers and they work real nice. If you ever wanted to hook up for a weekend, I have the switches to network over a 100 computers. I run LAN parties all the time and the most we ever had on our network is a 60, all playing computer games at the same time. I would be willing to shell out for a web page host if some body knows how to build a decent page. I think phpnuke web pages are the best and phpnuke forums let you do so much more then the one we are posting on now. <img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/seti2/stats.php?userID=1777"> |
