Message 1163250 - Posted: 17 Oct 2011, 17:34:42 UTC

I just installed BOINC on my work computer. I like the screensaver, but it seems to start for a second or two, and then suddenly stop. I have BOINC running on two computers at as well with no problems. This one is a Windows XP unit.

Also, BOINC seems to run fine in the background okay, but when I leave the computer, the screensaver will not come up. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "stop"?

Check which screensaver is set (in Windows screensaver settings) - probably it is set to <None> or timeout is big.

The screensaver was set to BOINC, and it was set to begin working after computer inactivity for 1 minute. It was also set to run for 1 hour on the screensaver, before the screen was to go blank and BOINC would continue to run behind the blank screen.

But, after one minute of inactivity, the BOINC screensaver would begin as normal. Instead of showing up as the normal SETI@home moving calculation grid, the screensaver would just close. It would revert back to the normal desktop, showing the wallpaper, and no screensaver. After another minute of no activity, the screensaver would again attempt to start, but within a second or two, shut off again to return to the normal desktop with only wallpaper background.

It was as if the mouse was constantly being "moved" to shut off the screensaver and revert the computer back to the desktop. Is it possible that plugging a mouse into a different USB port, such as a powered hub, could somehow trick the computer into acting as if the mouse was being moved?

Your task (I'm not sure about which XP computer you are talking about, this is from Computer ID 6196123):
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=2114026914

shows:
boinc_graphics_make_shmem failed

I think something prevents the screensaver to "contact" the graphics (video) driver (screensaver uses OpenGL)

Did you installed BOINC "normally" or as service (daemon, "Protected application execution")?

Can you see the graphics by selecting "Running" task in Tasks tab and clicking the [Show graphics] button?

Can you use OpenGL?:

If you can use OpenGL - you can also try to install BOINC 6.10.60 (Older version)
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Just Exit the running BOINC (check that boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are NOT running)
and install over the current installation.

If you later want to go again to 6.12.34 do the same (install 6.12.34 over the 6.10.60)
