I think previously it happened several times in some european cities. In the last 2 years it happened numerous times over central asia.

Old proverb. Whatever goes up has to come down, unless it achieves escape velocity. All satellites in LEO will eventually re-enter the atmosphere but most are small enough to completely burn up in the atmosphere.

But today space junk is out of control. Just a few years ago american and russian satellites collided in orbited which means orbital traffic is following big cities situation. I heard even some sizable unit of american army telescope unit tracks space junk to protect nasa property plus own military properties out there. I guess it is very unique waste management organization is evolving in the unique situation.
