Being the first new Supernova in over twenty years I figured some of you might be interested.

My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events.

And a nice write up in the Washington Post (late as usual) with a couple of pix.

There was a much nearer supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud in 1987. Maybe it was not the Ia type like this in the Pinwheel galaxy and the supernova of 1972, but it gave rise to speculations about coincident neutrino detection in the Monte Bianco tunnel and in Kamiokande, Japan, together with some evidence of gravitational waves. There was a discussion of this event in a paper called "SN1987A: Revisiting the Data and the Correlation between Neutrino and Gravitational Detectors", by P.Galeotti, G.V.Pallottino & G.Pizzella. 21 October 2008, but I cannot remember the link to it.
