HOW in the Sam Hill could we know that? I keep hearing about an orbiting telescope, taking a picture. whu? How many years would it be to fly a craft over the MW to take the pic, and how many light years would it take the digital signal to get back to Earth? Did dinosaurs launch a giant mirror up there, and now we can bounce a picture off it? I just cannot grasp this.

THIS kind of stuff is why a lot of us Luddites think you science geeks make this stuff up. We need to hear it in street English, I guess. Like string theory and even the theory/fact of evolution.

Nobody taught us how to think abstractly, or for ourselves, and you ask us to trust you?

So, how does looking across a big, fuzzy, swirling cloud of stars, et al, give one enough info to guess the shape of MW? It all looks like champagne bubbles, to me.

... We need to hear it in street English,

Ok so!

Yo homme,
Kick yo ass back fo som God Defyin scientific method that no God fearin brother can deny!

Dis just how hommes check dem stars in the Big ass MilkyWay.

Brother, mi homeboy go by the name profess Ed Churchwell, dude is ET AL!!!. Now he a Wisconsin Uni boy! Profess Ed did check out all dem stars with precision no bother ain't never seen before. Now Ed checked them stars in yo MilkyWay in light no man can see, checked them stars in infra-red light!!

Ma brother Ed den chalked out dem mighty fine mathematics on some crisp white paper and published the brothers science finding on yo scientific journal, go by de name, Astrophysical Journal Letters, and de evidence is cool brother, is cool!!!

Just check this out brother rriverstone, its all good; http://iopscience.iop.org/1538-3881/134/6/2099/pdf/1538-3881_134_6_2099.pdf

Its all good bro, trust me, man speaks the truth! MilkyWay got one mighty fine barr runnin whole way through the middle!!
Homme boy Johnney.

Otay... I guess I asked for that, huh? I think it was harder to read than astrophysics jargon, but hey, it's all good. Thank you, Johnny. If anybody ever asks me if astrophysics peeps r nerdy, uncool or dweebs, I'll certainly refer them to your response. I agree: post of the year, and I've only been here a week or so.

By careful observation, you can see so much more. A lot of it is just taking the time to look and to consider. It's a bit like looking at your dinner plate after a meal and seeing that there is nothing left to eat. Then Sherlock Holmes gets his magnifying glass out and then carefully and studiously scans across the scene and tells you what you've just eaten...

There is no blind 'trust' in science. Everything is open to question. Everything is compared against real world observation. There is no 'belief'. Everything must be observed and measured!

The data used by s@h has also been used to map the hydrogen density across our galaxy. Creating the map is a bit like how x-ray pictures are taken to show people's bones and dense tissue...

To explain further takes a bit more reading!

It's always good to question!

Keep searchin',
Martin

I agree, post of the year. And head on over to the MilkyWay project to learn more, and to help figure out the exact shape of our little home.

Here is the major "make you go hmmmmm" thing I got from MilkyWay: our present galaxy is the result of a collision between at least 2 galaxies, and the collision is still underway. Did anybody get the licence number of that other galaxy?

Another 'hmmmmm' moment: in a few billion years our galaxy will collide with the Andromeda Galaxy.

Computer simulation.

for normal computer geek summary:

Take all known objects/locations, known distances and directions, drop them into a CAD program. Zoom out, and spin it around and take a look from another direction.

Of course a true luddite would have smashed their PC long ago.
